In the first half of 2025
Madeira Wine sales declined by 6.1% in value and 10.6% in volume compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute of Madeira (Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, P. I. – IVBAM), the sales of “Madeira” wine amounted to approximately 1.4 million litres in the first six months of 2025, generating first-sale revenues of 9.3 million euros. Compared to the same period in 2024, this represents a decline of 10.6% in volume and a reduction of 6.1% in value.
During the period under review, the national market accounted for 246.8 thousand litres, corresponding to approximately 2.4 million euros in revenue. Of this, sales within the Autonomous Region of Madeira represented 206.8 thousand litres and 2.0 million euros. When compared with the same semester of 2024, national sales registered a year-on-year decrease of 23.1% in volume and 11.5% in value.
Exports to European Union (EU) countries totalled 715.6 thousand litres, generating revenues of 3.4 million euros. These figures reflect year-on-year decreases of 9.6% in volume and 4.1% in value. In turn, exports to non-EU countries reached 425.9 thousand litres, corresponding to approximately 3.5 million euros in revenue, representing year-on-year decreases of 3.4% in volume and 4.1% in value.
Among EU countries, the German market – the second most important in the EU – recorded positive developments, with increases of 3.5% in volume and 2.2% in value. In contrast, the French market – which remains the largest within the EU – registered declines of 15.8% in volume and 4.4% in value. Sales to Belgium, the third most significant EU market, showed a mixed trend, with an increase of 20.8% in volume but a decrease of 4.6% in value.
Among non-EU markets, Japan stood out, showing growth of 7.2% in volume and 10.4% in value. Conversely, the United States experienced significant reductions of 14.4% in volume and 20.6% in value. The United Kingdom, another key extra-EU market, also recorded negative performance, with decreases of 23.9% in volume and 6.6% in value.
Of the total volume commercialised in the first half of 2025, 82.0% corresponded to bottled wine, sold at an average price of 7.57 euros per litre (compared with 7.82 euros per litre in the first half of 2024). The remaining volume was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.71 euros per litre, which represents a decrease of 0.17 euros per litre compared to the same period of the previous year.

Focusing the analysis on the second quarter of 2025 alone, the commercialisation of Madeira wine amounted to 741.9 thousand litres, generating first-sale revenues of approximately 4.9 million euros. When compared to the second quarter of 2024, decreases of 3.0% in volume and 5.0% in value were recorded.
