In the first quarter of 2025
Balance between company incorporations and dissolutions increased year-on-year
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ) to Statistics Portugal (INE), in the first quarter of 2025, the number of company incorporations (433) with registered offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) exceeded the number of company dissolutions (95), resulting in a net positive balance of 338 companies. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there were 10 more incorporations and 82 fewer dissolutions, noting that the net balance in the first quarter of 2024 was +246.

Breaking down the data by Economic Activity, the main contributors to the overall positive balance in Q1 2025 were: “Accommodation and food services” (+59), “Construction” (+58), “Transport and storage” (+53), “Consulting, scientific, technical and similar activities” (+40), “Real estate activities” (+35), and “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (+30). A negative balance was observed solely in “Financial and insurance activities” (-1).
During the reference period, the number of incorporations exceeded that of dissolutions across all municipalities in the ARM: Funchal (264 incorporations versus 66 dissolutions), Santa Cruz (48 vs. 6), Câmara de Lobos (34 vs. 2), Machico (19 vs. 2), Calheta (17 vs. 3), Ponta do Sol (17 vs. 5), Ribeira Brava (13 vs. 3), São Vicente (13 vs. 5), Santana (3 vs. 0), Porto Moniz (2 vs. 1), and Porto Santo (3 vs. 2).
It is also worth noting that, in the first three months of the year, the ratio of incorporations to dissolutions in the ARM stood at 4.56, exceeding the national average of 3.72.
