Number of non-financial enterprises and its number of employees, turnover and Gross Value Added increased over 2018
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its official statistics website provisional data for 2019 concerning non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. These data will become final during the first quarter of 2021. The set of tables now released contains information for the 2014-2019 period. Part of the information of this statistical area will only become available with the final results.
In 2019 there were 28,483 enterprises of the non-financial sector headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which employed 79,153 persons.
In the reference year, the number of non-financial enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.2% and the employees by 6.4%. In Portugal the growth rates were 2.8% and 3.8%, respectively.

In 2019, the turnover generated by Madeira’s enterprises stood at 5,808.7 million Euros, up by 13.7% from 2018 (4.0% in the country). The Gross Value Added at market prices (GVAmp) stood at 1,783.5 million Euros, increasing by 8.7% from 2018 (5.8% in the country).
According to the legal form, 92.7% of the GVA was generated by companies and 7.3% by individual enterprises. By size, the data show that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) concentrated 73,8% of the GVA while the 21 large–sized enterprises headquartered in the Region were responsible for 26.2%.
By industry, the most important sector was “Accommodation and food service activities” (383.9 million euros, 21.5% of the total GVA), followed by “Trade” (286.2 million euros, 16.0% of the GVA), “Construction” (222.1 million euros; 12.5% of the GVA) and “Transportation and storage” (183.9 million euros, 10.3% of the GVA).
Apparent labour productivity of non-financial corporations reached 28 570 euros per person employed in 2019, up by 0.8% over the previous year (+1.4% in the country). The average compensation of employees was 13 588 euros per person employed, growing 3.3% compared to the previous year (+3.5% in the country).
