Aggregate value of withdrawals with purchases through automatic payment terminals of the SIBS network in the Region grew by 12.5%
In 2023, the amount related to the two main operations of the SIBS network (withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals), reached a total of 2, 674.2 million euros (constituting 2.6% of the national total), indicating a 12.5% increase compared to 2022 (+8.5% nationwide). This figure encompasses 2,088.3 million euros from operations conducted with national cards, reflecting a 10.0% increase from the previous year (+7.6% nationwide), and 585.9 million euros from international cards, representing an increase of 22.8% compared to 2022 (+16.6% nationwide).
Withdrawals amounted to 755.4 million euros (constituting 2.5% of the national total), with 689.8 million euros attributed to national cards and 65.6 million euros to international cards, marking increases of +2.5%, +2.6%, and +1.1%, respectively. Nationally, the growth mirrored these three indicators at +1.1%.
In turn, purchases through automatic payment terminals (POS) were around 1,918,8 million euros, of which 1,398.5 million were with national cards and 520.3 million euros with international cards. to 2022, the changes were also positive, +17.1%, +14.0% and +26.2%, respectively. Although not as pronounced as in the Region, the changes at national level were also positive (+12.1%, +10.9% and +20.1%, by the same order).
Payments totalled 220.4 million euros, corresponding to an increase of 15.5% (+29.3% nationwide).

Data by municipality shows that in Funchal, withdrawals and purchases in aggregate stood at 1,651.7 million euros, which corresponds to 61.8% of the total of the Region. Conversely, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value in this indicator, standing at 21.1 million euros. In terms of growth regarding the previous year, Porto Moniz stood out with the largest increase (+25.5%), with Machico (+9.0%) at the other end of the scale. In Funchal, the change was +11.7%.
Reducing the scope of analysis to the 4th quarter of 2023, it is observed that the value of withdrawals added to purchases via POS rose to 701.7 million euros, distributed in 196.8 million euros in withdrawals and 504.9 million euros in purchases through POS, representing changes, in the same order, of +8.7%, -0.5% and 12.8%.
Week from the 18th to the 24th of December recorded the highest number of withdrawals plus purchases through POS
Given that the available detailed information allows for a more in-depth analysis in terms of the evolution of the amounts transacted on the SIBS network, DREM presents, as in the previous year, an analysis of the period between the 1st week of November and the end of the year, as it is a very intense time of year in terms of shopping.
Thus, in the 1st week of the period under review (week 44, from October 30th to November 5th) the value of POS withdrawals and purchases stood at 53.5 million euros, growing by 10.1% compared to the previous week, and rising by 10.9% over the same week last year. In the Black Friday Week (week 47, from November 20th to November 26th), the amount of the aforementioned operations totalled 56.8 million euros, up by 15.6% over the previous week and up by 15.9% over the same week in 2022. In the following weeks, the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases via POS grew successively until Christmas, reaching a peak in the week ending on Christmas Eve with a sum of 70.4 million euros, +24.1% on the previous week, and +17.3% on the same week in the previous year. It should be noted that in 2022, the week with the highest turnover was also the week of Christmas. In the week after Christmas (the last week of 2023), the value of transactions returned to the levels of the first week of the period under review (week 44), with the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases via POS standing at 49.9 million euros.

Since the year 2023 has come to an end, DREM updated the time series on the SIBS network operations, most of which began in 1997. Data on operations, withdrawals, consultations, payments, purchases through POS, number of terminals and ATMs are now available.
