DREM releases new “In Focus” about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Region during 2020
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today the fourth “In Focus” (in Portuguese only) concerning the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the economic and social life of the Region, based on the most recent available data which cover in most cases the whole year of 2020. In some areas, there is already some data for 2021.
The main conclusions are summarised below:
Deaths – Deaths since the 17th March till the end of 2020 are higher than in the same period of the previous two years
Health – Number of COVID cases per inhabitant in the Autonomous Region of Madeira remains below national average
Labour market – Unemployment rate increases to 10.7% in the 4th quarter 2020; Labour underutilisation in the 4th quarter 2020 at the same level as 3 years ago; Employed population absent from work remains high, but below the peak of the 2nd quarter 2020; Volume of hours actually worked with a record-low in the 2nd quarter 2020; Registered unemployment continues to be on the rise; Labour Cost Index grew by 10.8% over the preceding year due to the drop in hours actually worked
Regional Indicator of Economic Activity – Economy in the red since March 2020
International trade – Impact on imports was greater than in exports; Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine with a significant decline in both volume and value
Construction and Housing – Building permits increased in 2020; Cement sales shrank in 2020; Average value of loan repayments with lower value due to Government measures to mitigate the crisis; Pandemic did not affect value of bank appraisals on housing; Dwelling sales recovered in the 3rd quarter 2020
Enterprises – 15% of the enterprises plan to reduce personnel in 2021
Formed and dissolved corporations – Despite the positive balance, formation and dissolution of corporation with low figures
Bankruptcy/Insolvencies – Pandemic still had no impact in the number of cases
E-fatura – Information from the tax authority also shows the impact of the pandemic in the economy
Fuels released for consumption – Volume of fuels released for consumption dropped by 16.6% in 2020 and prices also went down
Distribution of electricity – Year of 2020 with 7.2% drop compared to the previous year
Consumer Prices Index – Inflation rate remains around -1.5%
Monetary and financial sector – Multibanco network - Aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals declined by 10.3%; Bank loans to non-financial enterprises increase
Transport – Movement of passengers dropped in every mode of transport
Tourism – Pandemic had a huge impact in the industry
Population mobility – Share of the population that stayed at home in the Sundays of 2021 increased compared to 2020
Tax revenue – Impact of the pandemic affected the majority of taxes
Environment – Level of NO2 pollution in Funchal with a significant reduction
Cinema – Main indicators dropped sharply
