Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) increased by 11.2% compared to the same period last year and was 42.8% higher than the same month in 2019
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) today released the first data on air transport in the ARM for the month of May 2023, based on information from ANA - Airports of Portugal.
During the reference month, the airports of the ARM recorded a total of 421.4 thousand passengers transported by 2,867 commercial aircraft, reflecting year-on-year changes of 11.2% and 1.5% respectively. When compared to May 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also a growth of 42.8% in passenger traffic and 26.2% in aircraft movements.
Looking at the year-to-date data for 2023 (from January to May), there were year-on-year changes of +23.7% in aircraft movements and +37.2% in passenger movements.
On average, each aircraft (combining arrivals and departures) transported around 153 passengers at Madeira Airport, compared to 140 in May 2022, while at Porto Santo Airport, the number increased to over 85 passengers, compared to 69 in the same month last year.

In May 2023, both domestic and international passenger traffic at the airports of the ARM experienced positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic growing more (+15.4%) than domestic traffic (+6.6%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), international traffic grew by 43.9% and domestic traffic by 41.4%.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic accounted for the majority (54.9%) compared to domestic traffic (45.1% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic accounted for the majority (66.6% of the total), but with less disparity compared to the previous April.
Regular flights at the ARM airports constituted 91.3% of the total aircraft movements and 93.2% of the passengers in the reference month (compared to 91.4% and 92.8% in the same period last year, respectively).
In May 2023, the occupancy rate of the aircraft movements at the ARM airports was approximately 87.1%, with Madeira Airport reaching 88.0% and Porto Santo Airport at 74.7%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 79.6%, 80.4%, and 65.8%, respectively.
In the first five months of 2023, the total number of embarked and disembarked passengers at the airports of the ARM reached 1,885.0 thousand, with half of them corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including domestic connections (47.1% of the total) and the other half to international traffic (52.9%). Among international traffic, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (34.0%), followed by Germany (21.1%) and France (8.5%).
