Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 18.1% compared to the previous year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today, based on information from ANA - Airports of Portugal, the first data regarding air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of December 2023 and its total for the year. In December 2023, there was a recorded movement of 355.3 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported on 2,707 aircraft (commercial flights), reflecting year-on-year changes of +8.8% and -0.8%, respectively. When compared to December 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was a growth of 50.6% in passenger movement and 37.1% in aircraft movement.
Considering the cumulative data from January to December 2023, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +10.7% and +18.1%, respectively. The growth rates regarding 2019 are higher, with +30.7% in movements and +43.6% in passengers. In 2023, each aircraft (considering both landings and takeoffs) transported, on average, about 147 passengers (138 in 2022) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, that figure exceeded 86 passengers (80 the previous year).

In the year 2023, international traffic passenger movement increased by 21.8%, while in the domestic segment, the increase was 14.4%. Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), there was a higher growth in both segments, with domestic traffic growing by 48.4% and international by 39.4%. In this year, at Madeira Airport, international traffic (53.9%) predominated over domestic (46.1% of the total), while at Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic predominated (77.4% of the total).
In the reference year, regular flights at the ARM airports represented 91.8% of the total aircraft movements and 93.5% of passengers (91.4% and 93.0% the previous year, respectively).
In 2023, the occupancy of the aircraft movements at the ARM airports averaged 84.4%, with Madeira Airport reaching 85.0% and Porto Santo at 74.5%. Last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 80.0%, 80.7%, and 70.3%, respectively.
From January to December 2023, the embarked and disembarked passengers at the RAM airports amounted to 4,820.1 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within national territory, including domestic and internal connections (47.8% of the total together) and the other half to international traffic (52.2%). In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (32.8%), followed by Germany (20.4%) and France (8.3%).
In the IATA Summer (International Air Transport Association) from March 26th to October 28th, 2023, Madeira Airport operated commercial flights from 27 airlines (28 in the IATA Summer 2022), with 64 routes (60 in the corresponding period) to 57 destinations (54 in the IATA Summer 2022). At Porto Santo Airport, commercial flights operated on 7 routes (8 in the IATA Summer 2022), by 8 airlines (9 in the corresponding period) to 7 destinations (8 in the IATA Summer 2022).
