In November 2016

Overnight stays and total revenue went up by 11.1% and 14.3% year-on-year, respectively  

Initial estimates for November 2016 show an increase in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+11.1%), total revenue (+14.3%) and lodging revenue (+14.3%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at +14.7% in nights spent, +23.6% in total revenue and +26.2% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 501.5 thousand – a new all-time record for the month of November. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation also registered new maximums (23.9 and 14.8 million euros, respectively).

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month, the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +14.7% and +10.9%, respectively. The German market grew by 13.1%, the British market rose by 9.6%, whereas the French market fell by 5.9%.

In the first eleven months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 9.7% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+16.5%) and lodging revenue (+17.5%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 61.0%, up by 5.3 percentage points from the year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +12.8%, increasing to € 37.19.
