Number of overnight stays in the hotel establishments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 7.3 million, establishing a new annual record
Initial estimates for December 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+9.4%), total revenue (+11.6%) and lodging revenue (+14.9%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at 11.0% in nights spent, 15.1% in total revenue and 16.1% in revenue from accommodation.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +2.5% and +10.2%, respectively.
Taking in consideration the results for the year 2016, the overnight stays grew by 9.8%, while total and lodging revenue rose by 16.2% and by 17.4% over the previous year. The overnights stays topped 7.3 million, the total revenue reached 376.1 million Euros and the lodging revenue 241.1 million Euros. The preliminary results show that in 2016, the British market was the main market with 1.9 million overnight stays, followed by the German market (1.8 million overnight stays). The residents in Portugal and France generated 787.5 and 629.3 thousand overnights stays, respectively.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 48.9%, the highest between the seven Portuguese NUTS2 regions. The annual rate stood at 69.4%, 5.1 percentage points higher than in 2015.
The monthly average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +12.6%, increasing to € 36.27. The annual RevPAR was € 47.83 (+15.9% than in 2015).
More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses in 2016
The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2016, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 60,488 (+33.5% compared to 2015). This activity generated 2.3 million Euros. 72.5% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, the UK and Germany. 58.5% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 23.2% by the tour operators and the remaining 18.4% by the golf courses themselves.
Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports decreased by 9.9%
According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 519,700 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2016, a 9.9% drop when compared to the previous year.
