Total and lodging revenue in Madeira's hotel industry increased year-on-year despite the drop in the number of overnight stays

Initial estimates for July 2017 show a decrease in the overnight stays (-2.2%), with positive year-on-year rates of change in total revenue (+6.9%) and lodging revenue (+8.7%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 4.7% in nights spent, 13.1% in total revenue and 15.2% in revenue from accommodation.

It should be noted that the number of guest arrivals increased by 4.9%, and given the decline in the overnight stays, this represents a drop in the average stay from 5.66 nights in July 2016 to 5.34 nights in July 2017.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 765.0 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation reached 43.3 and 28.4 million euros, respectively.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were -6.3% and -1.6%, respectively. The British and German markets had a negative performance with the overnight stays generated by these markets declining by 2.7%,1.8%, respectively.

In the first seven months of 2017, the overnight stays increased by 1.6% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+8.6%) and lodging revenue (+8.9%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 79.8%, dropping by 1.4 percentage points from July 2016, but remaining as the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +7.6%, increasing to € 62.85.
