DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2021 and updates the corresponding Time Series (1976-2021)

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of the Tourism Statistics for the year 2021 and also updates the tables with data for that year.

This publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Total tourist accommodation

- In 2021, the number of overnight stays in the total tourist accommodation (hotel establishments, rural and housing tourism, local accommodation, time-sharing, holiday camps, camping sites and youth hostels) stood at 5.1 million (+81.2% compared to 2020 and a reduction of 40.3% compared to 2019). Residents in Portugal contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays, representing a year-on-year increase of 105.7%, while non-resident foreigners generated 3.8 million overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 74.5% in this variable. Compared to 2019, these markets showed changes of +16.9% and -48.4%, respectively.

Tourist accommodation establishments

-The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in 2021 – hotel establishments, rural tourism and local accommodation - stood at 5.0 million (+81.4% compared to 2020 and -38.6% than in 2019).

- Residents in Portugal contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays, a year-on-year increase of 106.2% (+19.6% than in 2019). The national market was the most important, representing 24.4% of the total followed by the British (20.1%) and the German (16.6%) markets.

- Overnight stays from non-resident foreigners originated around 3.8 million overnight stays (75.6% of the total), corresponding to a 74.6% increase compared to the previous year but remaining 47.0% below 2019. The main markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Spain and Denmark, which accounted for 78.0% of overnight stays from non-resident foreigners.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate (excluding local accommodation under 10 beds) stood at 44.6%, growing by 13.8 percentage points (pp) from 2020, but -13.4 pp than in 2019.

- The average stay was 4.86 nights, higher than the last year (4.83 nights).

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 38.86 euros in all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation under 10 beds), +72.4% than in 2020, but -12.3% than in 2019.

Hotel establishments

- In the hotel establishments, the overnight stays increased by 79.3% in 2021, having the total revenue and lodging revenue also increased by 104.0% and 110.6%, respectively. Compared to 2019, the changes are -42.2%, -35.3% and -33.7%, in the same order.

- The main markets were the UK (22.6% of the total) and Germany (15.2%). The British market grew by 54.0% and the German by 17.5%.

-  Domestic tourists produced 979.0 thousand overnight stays (+118.6% than in 2020 and +19.5% that in 2019), representing 25.1% of the total, which allowed the Portuguese market to stand out as the most important in this segment, followed by the British and German.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 47.5%, growing by 14.8 percentage points from 2020 and -14.4 pp than in 2019.

- The average stay was 4.89 nights, a higher ratio than in the previous year (4.86 nights).

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 42.43 euros (+74.1% compared to 2020 and -11.3% than in 2019).

Rural tourism

- In 2021, the average number of establishments operating in rural tourism was 57, where 128,513 overnight stays were registered, representing an increase of 109.5% compared to 2020, but a decrease of 18.7% compared to 2019.

Local accommodation

 - In local accommodation establishments, 176,456 guests were registered (+85.4%), which resulted in 961.8 thousand overnight stays, representing an increase of 86.9% compared to 2020. Compared to 2019, the changes were -22.4% and -21.5%, respectively.

Time-sharing

- This segment also recovered after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic but registered only 25,877 guests (+70.7% compared to 2020). Overnight stays stood at 270,524, increasing 52.8% compared to 2020. In the same order, the changes compared to 2019, were -59.1% and -56.7%.

- Of the total number of guests and overnight stays, about 74.2% are already recorded in hotel establishments, as all time-sharing establishments in the form of "tourist accommodation" are included in the sample of the Survey on Guest Stays in Accommodation Establishments (IPHH).

Golf in the Autonomous Region of Madeira

 - The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2021, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 45,626 (+21.9% compared to 2020, but -30.2% than in 2019). This activity generated 1.9 million euros.

Movement of passengers on cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports

- The restrictive measures regarding the pandemic situation of COVID-19, had a strong impact on this segment, being one of the most affected. In the Region, according to data provided by the Ports authority, in 2021, 125 cruise ships were counted (up by 55 over 2020). However, there were only 113,824 passengers in transit (-20.5%) than in 2020),  mainly counted in the 4th quarter of 2021, since between January and September (except June) there were no transit passenger movements at the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
