In April 2016

Hotel industry kept up a steady growth pace, with the increase in the main variables standing above national average

Initial estimates for April 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+8.1%), total revenue (+15.8%) and lodging revenue (+16.8%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 6.2% in nights spent, 11.8% in total revenue and 11.9% in revenue from accommodation.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists  were +20.3% and +6.9%, respectively.

The good results of April 2016 are probably linked with the festival Flower which may have generated a higher demand for Madeira by tourists than in the previous years.

In the first four months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 9.8% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+15.8%) and lodging revenue (+16.8%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 70.9%, 4.7 percentage points higher than a year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +15.5%, increasing to € 51.03.
