In May 2016

Overnight stays increased by 12.2% and total revenue by 19.3% year-on-year, above national average

Initial estimates for May 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+12.2%), total revenue (+19.3%) and lodging revenue (+22.0%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 7.8% in nights spent, 14.9% in total revenue and 15.8% in revenue from accommodation.

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists  were +22.4% and +11.3%, respectively.

In the first five months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 10.9% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+16.9%) and lodging revenue (+18.1%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 73.9%, up by 7.2 percentage points from the year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +21.0%, increasing to € 50.02.
