DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2015 and updates the respective Time Series (1976-2015)

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2015 and at the same time updates the Time Series (1976-2015) for this statistical area. The tables with data for 2015 were also updated.

The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Accommodation establishments (total)

- In 2015, the number of overnight stays, considering all types of establishment, stood at 7.1 million, up by 7.8% over 2014. The residents in Portugal originated a total of 762.2 thousand overnight stays (+4.9%), while non-residents accounted for 6.3 million (+8.2%).

Hotel establishments

- In hotel establishments, there were increases in overnight stays (+6.2%), total revenue (+10.4%) and lodging revenue (+12.7%).

- The main markets were the UK (25.3% of the total bednights), Germany (24.2%) and Portugal (10.3%). The British market rose by 16.1% and the German market by 6.9%. UK  regained the status of most important market, which had been lost to the German market  in 2012.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 64.3%, up by 3.4 percentage points from 2014.

- The average length of stay remained at 5.5 nights.

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €41.28 (up by 12.6% from 2014).

Rural tourism

- In rural tourism, the main indicators showed an increase. Bednights  grew by 15.5% while total revenue rose by 19.0% and lodging revenue by 16.9%.

Local lodging

 - The indicators of the local accommodation establishments showed a very pronounced growth in 2015, with bednights increasing by 52.0% to a total of 313,290.

Golf

 - The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2015, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 45,314 (+3.2% compared to 2014). This activity generated 2.2 million Euros (+3.7%). 61.1% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. 34.8% of the total rounds were sold by tour operators, 34.0% by the golf courses themselves and the remaining 31.2% by hotel establishments and the similar.

Movement of  passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports

 - According to the data provided by the Ports authority, 576,627 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted  in 2015, increasing by 21.8% when compared to the previous year. The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira increase went up by 9.1%, reaching a total of 312.
