DREM releases statistical report marking International Women's Day
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, in alignment with the celebration of International Women's Day, established by the United Nations in 1975, compiles a set of indicators that allow for the characterisation of Women in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) at the social and economic levels, within the domains of demography, labour market, economy, justice, social protection, health, and education. For each of these domains, the latest data made available by DREM on its website are utilized.
The following indicators stand out:
In 2021, in the ARM...
Single-parent households headed by mothers constituted 13.2% of the total number of private households, with 7.0% being mothers with at least one child under 25 years old;
About 5 out of every 7 persons living in collective housing with social support were women;
Out of the total resident population with completed tertiary education, 62.9% were women;
2.8% of resident women had foreign nationality;
22.3% of resident women lived abroad for a continuous period of at least 1 year;
Of work-related accidents, 27.4% occurred in women;
Out of 2,875 resident deaths, 50.7% were women, with "Diseases of the circulatory system" being the leading cause of death, accounting for 29.3% of female deaths;
The average monthly earnings of women were 1,125.12 euros;
25% of women earned 1,200.17 euros or more.
In 2022, in the ARM...
134,197 women resided, accounting for 53.0% of the resident population;
For every 100 women, 12 are children or young persons under 15 years old, 65 are persons of working age (15-64 years), and 24 are 65 years or older;
23.0% of women aged 16 to 89 had completed tertiary education (14.8% for men);
There were 1,742 births among residents, of which 10 were at home, 27 were to women under 20 years old, and 597 were to women aged 35 or older;
The average age of mothers at the birth of their first child was 30.5 years;
The average number of children per woman of childbearing age (15-49 years) was 1.25;
The average life expectancy at birth for women in the triennium 2020-2022 was 81.63 years;
18 marriages between female persons were celebrated;
The average age of women at first marriage was 33.4 years;
793 more women died than were born;
The widowhood rate among women was 5.9‰, more than double the rate among men;
5,945 foreign women resided or legally remained, one-third of whom were nationals of the European Union (EU 27);
Among active non-financial companies with 5 or more employees in the ARM, 39.7% of those in management roles were women;
777 women were identified as victims of domestic violence crimes against spouses or similar recorded by the PSP (police);
759 female doctors, 145 female dentists, 2,106 female nurses, and 216 female pharmacists were registered in their respective Orders;
73.7% of women knew languages other than their mother tongue.
In 2023, in the ARM...
Of women aged 16 to 89, 53.2% had at most completed the 3rd cycle of primary education, and 23.0% had completed tertiary education;
The employment rate for women was 53.7%;
In the service sector, 94.5% of employed women worked;
About one in four employed women worked in professions at the level of "Specialists in intellectual and scientific activities";
10.5% of employed women worked part-time;
In the fourth quarter, 13.2% of employed women worked from home;
The unemployment rate for women was 6.2%;
The 10 existing fire brigades in the Region counted 96 women among their personnel;
Younger women showed better indicators in terms of education and training than men.
In the academic year 2021/2022, in the ARM...
Women constituted 72.2% of the teaching staff;
Of those enrolled in tertiary education, 53.5% were women;
Women favoured tertiary education in the field of "Health and social protection";
Of the graduates, 57.8% were women.
