Retention and desistance rate at basic education decreased while the success rate at secondary education increased
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, now including the data from the school year 2014/2015. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OSERAM), a unit that belongs to the Regional Directorate of Innovation and Management (DRIG) of the Regional Secretariat for Education.
Concerning pre-primary education, the data show that there were 164 institutions. The number of kindergarten teachers in preschool education stood at 742 while the number of children enrolled at this level was 6,586 (6,755 in 2013/2014).
Compared to the previous school year, the number of institutions providing basic education remained unchanged at 118, while those providing the 2nd cycle increased by one. The number of institutions providing the 3rd cycle in the 2014/2015 school year decreased by one from the prior school year.
The number of students enrolled decreased in all three basic levels of education (-2.5% in the 1st cycle, -5.4% in the 2nd cycle and -3.1% in the 3rd cycle). The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 8.9%, 1.9 percentage points (p.p.) below the previous school year.
The number of educational establishments providing secondary education was the same as in the previous year: 20 public and 8 private. The number of students enrolled at this education level increased by 2.8%. The success rate at secondary education was 83.1%, up by 4.3 p.p. from 2013/2014.
Compared to 2013/2014, the teaching staff at the 1st cycle increasead by 0.9%. The teaching staff at the 2nd cycle of basic education decreased by 1.1%. In the 3rd cycle and secondary education the decline was less pronounced (0.6%).
The number of tertiary education institutions remained unchanged, while the number of enrolled students decreased by 1.1% compared to the previous school year. The teaching staff increased 5.7% (+16 teachers).
