Retention and desistance rate at basic education and success rate at secondary education decreased
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, now including the data from the school year 2013/2014. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OSERAM).
Concerning pre-primary education, data show that there were 163 institutions (same as the previous school year). The number of kindergarten teachers in preschool education stood at 750 while the number of children enrolled at this level was 6,755 (-3.6 % than in 2012/2013). The number of institutions that offers basic education dropped by one in the case of public school establishments of the 1st cycle and by 5 in the case of private schools of the 3rd cycle. The number of students enrolled decreased in all three basic levels of education (-4.7% in the 1st cycle, -2.9 % in the 2nd cycle and -4.2% in the 3rd cycle). The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 10.8%, -1.0 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the previous school year
The number of educational establishments providing secondary education dropped by one and the number of students enrolled at this education level declined by 0.3%. The success rate at secondary education was 78.8%, down by 1.4 p.p. from 2012/2013.
Compared to 2012/2013, the teaching staff at the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education decreased by 1.0% and by 15.4% respectively. In the 3rd cycle and secondary education, the teaching staff dropped by 2.2%.
The number of tertiary education institutions remained unchanged, while the number of enrolled students increased by 2.4% compared to the previous school year. The teaching staff decreased 2.1% (-6 teachers).
