Retention and desistance rate at basic education decreased and success rate at secondary education increased
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, now including the data from the school year 2012/2013. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OSERAM).
Concerning pre-primary education, data show that there were 11 institutions less than in the 2011/2012 school year (-6.3%), while the number of students enrolled and teaching staff dropped by 8.0% and 5.6%, respectively.
The number of institutions that offers basic education also decreased compared to the previous school year (5 institutions less, -2.5%). The number of students enrolled decreased by 3.3%. The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 11.8%, -1.1% compared to the previous year.
One more educational establishment providing secondary education was counted, although the number of students enrolled at this education level declined by 1.5%. The success rate at secondary education was 80.2%, 4.4 percentage points (p.p.) more than in 2011/2012.
Compared to 2011/2012, the teaching staff at the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education decreased by 6.2% and 2.0% respectively. In the 3rd cycle and secondary education, the teaching staff dropped by 2.5%.
The number of tertiary education institutions remained unchanged, while the number of enrolled students decreased by 9.1% compared to the previous school year.
