In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 14.2% of residents between the ages of 18 and 74 have an immigrant background
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases the results of the Survey on Living Conditions, Origins and Trajectories of the Resident Population, 2023 (ICOT) in Portugal, conducted in the first semester of 2023 among a representative sample of households residing in the country. The sample in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) consisted of 1,530 dwellings, surveying only one person between the ages of 18 and 74 who had been residing in Portugal for at least one year or whose intended residence was for at least one year.
One of the objectives of this statistical operation was to enhance knowledge about the diversity of the resident population concerning their origins and ethnic identification. The available data allows for characterising persons residing in the ARM aged between 18 and 74 in terms of ethnic identification and immigrant background.
The definition of immigrant, and immigrant background, is based on a person's place of birth. Through the combination of the person's country of birth with the countries of birth of parents (mother or father) and grandparents (maternal or paternal), the surveyed persons were categorized according to the typology of immigrant background, comprising the following groups:
Based on the annual estimates of the resident population as of December 31, 2022 (Census 2021), it is estimated that 190.1 thousand persons between the ages of 18 and 74 resided in the ARM, the majority (88.0%) being Portuguese nationals.
Among persons in the analysed age group, 84.9% (161.3 thousand persons) self-identified as belonging to the white ethnic group, and 2.9% (5.5 thousand persons) identified with the mixed origin or affiliation group. At the national level, these proportions were very similar: 84.1% and 3.5%, respectively. Analysing by NUTS 2, Algarve had the highest proportion of persons in the mixed origin or affiliation group (6.4%), followed by Área Metropolitana de Lisboa with 6.1%. Centro and the Autonomous Region of the Azores had the lowest proportions, both with 1.8%.
In the ARM, 85.8% of persons aged 18 to 74 do not have an immigrant background (163.1 thousand persons), with an estimate that among those with an immigrant background (14.2%; 27.0 thousand), 22.7 thousand persons are first-generation immigrants, corresponding to 12.0% of the total. In Portugal, these proportions were 81.5%, 18.5%, and 12.5%, respectively. It is noteworthy that the proportion of persons with an immigrant background residing in Algarve represents 31.0% of the total, and in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, it constitutes 29.2%.
