In 2019
Number of administered inoculations in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased
In 2019, according to information provided by the Institute of Health Administration (IASaúde) 105,864 inoculations were administered to residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represented a 0.8% increase when compared to 2018 (105,014 inoculations). In the Regional Imunisation Programme, 57,539 inoculations were administered, meaning a 1.8% increase over 2018 (56,516). Outside this Programme, the number of administered vaccines stood at 48,325, decreasing by 0.4% from the previous year (48,498). It should be noted that in 2019, vaccines like PN23 (Polysaccharide vaccine of 23 valences against infections by Streptococcus penumoniae) and MenB (Vaccine against invasive disease by Neisseria meningitidis group B) were recommended to risk groups.
In the recommended schedule, in 2019, children who completed 1 year old showed a vaccination coverage that ranged between 13.9% (vaccine against tuberculosis, recommended since 2016 only to risk groups) and 99.0%. In this group, the coverage of the tuberculosis vaccine increased by 3.3 percentage points (p.p.) over 2018 and the vaccine against Hepatitis B (3rd inoculations) also increased by 0.2 p.p. in the same period of time. In the remaining vaccines the vaccination coverage decreased when compared to the previous year.
The children who completed 2 years old the coverage increased in: the vaccine against infections by Streptococcus pneumoniae of 13 serotypes (3rd inoculations), which presented a coverage of 97.9% (97.2% in 2018) and in the vaccine against invasive disease by Neisseria meningitidis C (single dose), that showed a 98.6% coverage (98.5% in 2018). The remaining vaccine coverages of this age group showed lower values in 2019 than in the previous year. The most significant drop (0.8 p.p.) was in the vaccines against diphtheria and against tetanus (4th inoculations), showing 97.3% coverages.
In children who reached 6 years old, there was a coverage reduction in all types of the administered vaccines especially in the vaccine coverage against mumps (2nd inoculations) that decreased from 97.2% in 2018 to 95.1% in 2019 (2.1 p.p.).
In children who completed 11 years old, the vaccine coverage against infection by the human papilloma virus (2nd inoculations) was the only one that registered an increase (4.8 p.p.) in 2019, from 82.9% in 2018 to 87.7% in 2019, exceeding the recommended value for group immunity (85%). It should also be noted that the coverage (91.1%) of the tetanus vaccine (6th inoculations) in this age group remains under 95%, the recommended value for which group immunity is obtained. For the remaining groups, vaccination coverage under 95% is found in children who have completed 6 years old, concerning the vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough/pertussis and injectable inactivated vaccine against polio.
