Hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded an increase in the main indicators
In 2019, the Private and Public Hospitals Survey (IHPARA) reported the existence of 10 hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, one more when compared to 2018 (9). Of that total 3 are official and 7 private, all located in the municipality of Funchal.
The average number of used hospital beds in the reference year (arithmetic average of the quarters) amounted to 1,868 beds (908 in public hospitals and 960 in private hospitals), which represented a slight increase of 1.2% when compared to 2018 (1,846). The bed ratio per 1,000 inhabitants rose to 7.4 in 2019 (7.3 in 2018).
At the end of 2019, the hospital staff consisted of 497 doctors, 1,386 nurses, 269 diagnostic and therapeutic technicians and 1,214 individuals of the auxiliary staff in a total of 4,495 health professionals. When compared to 2018, the hospital staff in 2019 rose by 11.6%, an increase that was shared by all categories: + 6.4% in the number of doctors, + 16.0% in nurses, +10.0% in auxiliary personnel and + 15.5% in diagnostic and therapeutic technicians. The professional group with the highest increase was “nurses” and the group with the lowest increase was “doctors”.
In 2019, there were 26.8 thousand hospitalisations (25.8 thousand in 2018), a 3.6% increase over 2018. To that figure corresponded 576.5 thousand hospitalisation days. Of the total hospitalisations, 72.6% occurred in public hospitals.
315.3 thousand medical consultations were performed at the hospital's external consultation unit, a 6.8% increase, when compared to 2018 (295.2 thousand consultations).
On average, about 40.3 surgeries (except minor surgeries) were performed per day in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2019, 29.9 of which in public hospitals. The global average value represents an increase of 7.9 surgeries / day compared to 2018 (32.4).
In the emergency services of the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 125.2 thousand calls were made, which correspond to an increase of 5.8% when compared to 2018 (118.3 thousand calls). Approximately 90.1% of the calls took place in public hospitals.
