DREM publishes time series of electoral results for the Autonomous Region of Madeira from 1975 to 2024

On the occasion of European Statistics Day, which is marked today, the 20th of October, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released a time series of electoral results (1975-2024) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, now available on its website.

The election results are included in the Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, an annual publication issued by DREM. The section entitled “Political Participation” presents the outcomes of each election held in the Region. These data are broken down by municipalities and by political parties or candidates, in the case of presidential elections.

Considering that electoral data is included in the aforementioned publication and that Statistics Portugal also provides some related data on its website, DREM has decided to compile the results of all elections held in the Autonomous Region of Madeira from 1975 (Constituent Assembly) to 2024. These results have been organised into separate files for municipal, national legislative, regional legislative, European, and presidential elections.

This publication is accompanied by an interactive data panel (dashboard) available in Portuguese only, enabling users to consult the electoral results quickly and intuitively.

The results are available for the Region, organised by municipality and parish, whenever the sources allow. The files follow a uniform structure, listing the numbers of registered voters, ballots cast, blank and null votes, as well as the number of votes received by each political party or presidential candidate along with their respective percentages. It should be noted that, due to the dashboard’s design (where the sum of the parishes must correspond to the total for the municipalities and the sum of the municipalities must correspond to the total for the Region), the data used are exclusively from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).

The primary sources of information for this compilation were, firstly, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and, secondly, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI). However, when necessary and in the absence of data or disaggregation from the CNE, information from the MAI was used. As a result, given the use of different sources, the totals for municipalities may not always align with those for the Region, nor may those for the parishes align with their respective municipality, particularly as MAI data are provisional. Nonetheless, given the exceptional nature of this data release, it was deemed beneficial for users to access as much information as possible, and any potential discrepancies do not, in any way, distort the overall conclusions.

It should also be noted that during the data compilation process, minor summation errors were identified, particularly with regard to the number of voters, the total of null and blank votes, and the votes cast for political parties, especially in elections from earlier years. As these discrepancies are now irreconcilable, DREM has, in these few instances, added an additional line labelled “discrepancy,” to report these differences, without affecting the overall analysis of the data.

Through this initiative, the Region now has a historical repository of electoral results, providing users with an accessible tool for data analysis. DREM remains committed to updating this time series following future elections, first with the provisional data from the MAI, and subsequently with the official data from the CNE.
