DREM releases a new publication entitled Territorial Portrait of Madeira, with the first chapter covering the tourism sector

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today (October 20th - European Statistics Day), the Territorial Portrait of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), whose first edition is about tourism, more specifically concerning tourism accommodation.

The Territorial Portrait of Tourism aims to contribute to a broader knowledge of tourism supply and demand from a territorial settlement perspective. Using statistical information from the Survey on guest stays in hotels and other establishments” (IPHH) of Statistics Portugal, I.P. (INE) and the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), it aims to understand structural dynamics that differentiate the regional territory in tourism in the period 2017-2021.

The Territorial Portrait of Tourism includes two approaches: tourism supply and tourism demand. The study of the supply of tourist accommodation comprises characterisation of the distribution, diversity, categorisation and qualification of tourism supply from a territorial perspective. Tourism demand focuses on a territorial analysis of the intensity, seasonality and origin of tourism demand.

In the last two years of the period under analysis, the tourism sector was extremely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, since from March 2020 there was a very sharp reduction in the incoming of tourists to the Region. According to data released by DREM, between March 2020 and March 2021, the tourist accommodation sector recorded very pronounced year-on-year drops. The recovery was progressive, and only from October 2021 did the overnight stays exceed the pre-pandemic value. Along this scenario, it must be taken into account that some decreases in tourism supply and demand observed in 2020 and 2021 were determined by an atypical context.

Throughout the territorial portrait, the main results are presented using graphics and cartograms created using GIS (Geographic Information System) technology and the ArcGIS mapping tool. The GIS approach allows for visualising, analysing and interpreting the results in a more appealing way for a better understanding of relations, patterns and trends existing in tourism in the regional territory.

This release is accompanied by a Storymap (interactive digital publication), which allows a spatial analysis and interactive visualisation, including images, videos and descriptive texts.
