[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, a total number greater than that of the INE is mentioned concerning guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]
In September 2024
Revenue per available room (RevPAR) grew by 16.1%, exceeding the 100-euro mark
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded the arrival of 204.8 thousand guests, in September 2024, with overnight stays surpassing 1 090.3 thousand, reflecting year-on-year increases of 5.4% and 4.3%, respectively. During this month, the hotel sector accounted for 69.4% of overnight stays (756.9 thousand), noting a year-on-year decline of 1.4%, while local accommodation (28.2% of the total) and rural tourism (2.4% of the total) saw increases of 21.5% and 7.3%, respectively.
For comparability with the data published by INE, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. According to this logic of result calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a slight year-on-year increase of 0.1%, lower than the national increase of 2.4%.
The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in September 2024 was 73.9%, marginally lower (-0.1 p.p.) than in the same month of the previous year. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate reached 84.3%, down from 85.8% in September 2023.
In September 2024, the average stay in tourist accommodation was 4.78 nights, a slight decrease compared to the same month of the previous year, which settled at 4.75 nights. The highest values continue to be recorded in hotels, with 4.83 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.69 nights) and rural tourism (3.52 nights).
From January to September 2024, the total number of guests reached 1.706 million, up 5.6% from the same period in 2023, while overnight stays neared 9.0 million, an increase of 6.2% over the same period in 2023.
Considering overnight stays, the top 10 source markets accounted for 83.6% of the total in September 2024. Germany, the largest contributor, represented 20.3% of overnight stays, with a positive year-on-year change of 3.0%, while the United Kingdom (18.5%) saw a decline of 4.8% compared to September 2023. The Portuguese market ranked third, comprising 15.5% of total overnight stays and growing 1.1% year-on-year. The French market followed in fourth place, accounting for 7.8% of overnight stays and registering a substantial increase of 17.5%, while Poland (6.2%; +12.3%) and the Netherlands (4.7%; +21.0%) also showed significant growth.
Year-to-date (January to September 2024), the top two source markets displayed divergent trends, with Germany showing a pronounced increase of 4.8% in overnight stays, while the United Kingdom experienced a slight decline of 0.1%. The Portuguese resident market, the third largest, recorded a decrease of 2.4% in the same period.
Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in September 2024 experienced year-over-year increases of 15.1% and 17.9%, respectively, amounting to 75.8 million euros and 54.9 million euros. Nationally, the year-over-year changes were also positive, with total revenue increasing by 12.0% and revenue from accommodation by 12.7%. Cumulatively, the region saw changes of +13.6% in total revenue and +14.4% in revenue from accommodation.
In September 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 101.52 euros, +16.1% higher than the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation rose from 101.84 euros in September 2023 to 120.37 euros in September 2024 (+18.2% year-over-year).
From January to September 2024, the RevPAR in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 85.45 euros, up 11.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 91.96 euros in the hotel sector (+12.9%). In terms of ADR, the values were higher, at 110.33 euros for tourist accommodation (+12.5% year-over-year) and 114.49 euros for hotels (+13.3%).
Number of rounds played on the Region's Golf Courses grew by 8.9% in the first nine months of 2024
According to the Golf Course Survey, a total of 55,201 rounds were played on the three golf courses in the ARM from January to September of 2024, which marks a +8.9% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. This activity generated approximately 2.9 million euros in revenue. Non-members made up 72.3% of the rounds played, mostly originating from Nordic countries, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Of the total rounds, 58.3% were sold by hotels and related establishments, 29.3% by the golf courses themselves, and the remaining 12.4% by tour operators.
Approximately 386.1 thousand transit passengers from cruise ships arrived at the ports of the ARM in the first nine months of 2024
According to data provided by the Administration of the Ports of the ARM, there were 386,057 transit passengers on 161 cruise ships that docked at ARM ports during the first nine months of this year, an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period the previous year. However, the number of dockings decreased by 4.2% compared to the same period of the previous year, with 7 fewer ships when compared to the same period of 2023.
