[NOTE: Regarding the monthly release for the 2026 reference year, DREM maintains the same model as the previous year, publishing an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. In turn, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its release, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, which is why, in this news item, in the Em Foco section and in the tables published by DREM, a higher overall total is mentioned compared to INE, with regard to guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms and revenues, the values coincide with those of INE due to the fact that their calculation excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]
In April 2026
Overnight stays in the Region's tourist accommodation grew 4.2% year-on-year, surpassing 1.1 million
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded, in April 2026, the arrival of 238.8 thousand guests, who generated 1 141.1 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year changes of +7.4% and +4.2%, respectively. The hotel segment concentrated 63.6% of overnight stays (725.3 thousand), growing 0.4% year-on-year. Local accommodation (34.2% of the total) rose 13.1%, while rural tourism (2.3% of the total) fell 7.7%.
For comparability purposes with data released by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, and according to this calculation methodology, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year change of -0.1%, a trend opposite to that observed at the national level (+0.6%).
In April, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays continued to be recorded in Alentejo (+8.4%) and Norte (+4.1%). In turn, Centro and the Autonomous Region of the Azores recorded more significant decreases (-8.7% and -7.5%, respectively). The Algarve (25.9%), Grande Lisboa (24.6%) and Norte (18.6%) together concentrated 69.2% of total overnight stays.
In the first four months of 2026, guests arriving at the Region's total tourist accommodation totalled 758.1 thousand, representing a growth of 8.5% compared to the same period last year. Overnight stays also recorded an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 3.8 million.
The net bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the Region, in the reference month, was 68.1%, -2.4 percentage points (pp) compared to that observed in the same month of the previous year (70.5%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 78.1% (80.4% in April 2025).
In April 2026, the average length of stay across all tourist accommodation was 4.32 nights (4.50 in April 2025). The highest values continue to be observed in local accommodation and hotels, both with an average stay of 4.36 nights, followed by rural tourism, which presents the lowest average stay, of 3.26 nights.
It should be noted that the 10 main source markets represented 80.4% of total overnight stays recorded in April 2026. Standing out with a higher share were Germany (19.9% of the total; +6.1% compared to April 2025), Portugal (17.7%; +14.3%) and the United Kingdom (13.0%; -6.5%). In fourth position, in terms of relative share of total overnight stays, is the French market (9.9%; +4.1%), followed by the Polish (5.5%; -4.1%) and Dutch (5.0%; +16.6%) markets.
In April 2026, total revenue and accommodation revenue recorded year-on-year growth of 8.6% and 7.0%, respectively, standing, in the same order, at 80.2 million euros and 58.1 million euros. Across the country as a whole, and in the same month, total revenue and accommodation revenue also recorded year-on-year growth, standing at +5.2% and +4.0%, respectively.
On an accumulated basis, in the Region, total revenue and accommodation revenue recorded changes of +9.0% and +8.2%, respectively, totalling, from January to April 2026, 258.0 million euros and 183.0 million euros.
In April 2026, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) was around 104.25 euros across all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), +2.6% compared to the same month of the previous year. In turn, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation went from 126.43 euros in April 2025 to 133.44 euros in April 2026 (+5.5% year-on-year change).
From January to April 2026, RevPAR across all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) stood at 84.04 euros, representing an increase of 4.8% compared to the same period last year. In hotels, RevPAR was 90.61 euros, corresponding to a rise of 5.3%.
