DREM releases the final results of the 2025 Tourism Statistics and updates the corresponding Time Series (1976-2025)

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) today makes available, on its website, the publication of the final results of the Tourism Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), with reference to 2025. This publication includes an analysis of the main results, from which the following points summarising the sector's performance in that year can be highlighted:

Accommodation establishments (total) – Overnight stays rose by 7.9% in 2025, approaching 13 million

In 2025, the number of overnight stays in overall tourist accommodation (hotel establishments, rural and housing tourism, local accommodation, timesharing, holiday camps and campsites) exceeded 12.9 million, representing growth of 7.9% compared with 2024. Residents in Portugal accounted for around 2.1 million overnight stays, showing an increase of 23.6% compared with the previous year, while resident foreigners originated around 10.8 million overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 5.4%.

Tourism accommodation establishments – 2025 recorded all-time highs: 2.4 million guest arrivals and 12.7 million overnight stays

In 2025, collective tourist accommodation (hotel establishments, rural tourism and local accommodation) recorded 2.4 million guest arrivals, representing growth of 9.0% compared with 2024.
The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in 2025 reached 12.7 million, corresponding to an increase of 8.3% compared with 2024.
Residents in Portugal accounted for around 2.1 million overnight stays, up 23.9% on 2024. The national market was the third main source market, accounting for 16.2% of total overnight stays, behind the German (19.5%) and British (16.8%) markets.
Overnight stays from non-resident foreigners approached 10.7 million (83.8% of the total), recording an increase of 5.7% compared with 2024. The main source markets were Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, the Netherlands, the United States of America (USA), Spain and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for 74.1% of overnight stays from non-resident foreigners (75.2% in 2024).
The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) reached 68.1%, up by 1.3 percentage points (pp) on 2024. The net room occupancy rate, in turn, stood at 78.3% in 2025, up by 1.9 pp compared with 2024.
The average length of stay in the Region's tourist accommodation stood at 4.70 nights, slightly lower than in 2024 (4.71 nights).
In 2025, total revenue in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) reached 887.1 million euros, while revenue from accommodation stood at around 637.0 million euros, representing growth of 16.6% and 17.8%, respectively, compared with 2024.
RevPAR, the indicator measuring revenue per available room, reached 97.03 euros for tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds), representing an increase of 16.2% compared with 2024. Average daily rate (ADR) stood at around 123.86 euros, corresponding to an increase of 13.3% compared with the previous year.

Hotel establishments – Overnight stays grew by 4.4% in 2025, with market share around 68%

In 2025, hotel establishments recorded the arrival of 1.6 million guests, generating 8.6 million overnight stays, representing positive changes of 5.1% and 4.4%, respectively, compared with the previous year.
This segment accounted for 67.8% of total overnight stays in the ARM's collective tourist accommodation, equivalent to the lowest share ever recorded.

Overnight stays by non-residents exceeded 7.1 million, representing 82.4% of total overnight stays in hotel establishments and representing growth of 0.8% compared with the previous year. The main source markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and the USA, which together accounted for 76.3% of overnight stays by residents abroad in this segment.
National tourists generated more than 1.5 million overnight stays, representing 17.6% of total overnight stays in hotel establishments. This indicator recorded an increase of 24.9% compared with 2024. The Portuguese market was the third main source market for this segment, preceded by the British and German markets.
In 2025, the net bed occupancy rate in hotel establishments stood at 71.2%, up 1.2 pp on 2024, reaching its highest value in August (80.0%).
The average length of stay in hotel establishments stood at 4.79 nights in 2025, a slight decrease of 0.2% compared with 2024 (4.80 nights).
Total revenue in hotel establishments reached 808.4 million euros, while revenue from accommodation approached 569.7 million euros, recording positive changes of 17.6% and 18.7%, respectively, compared with 2024.
RevPAR stood at 104.22 euros in 2025, up 16.5% on the previous year (89.46 euros). Average daily rate (ADR) in hotel establishments stood at 127.93 euros, up 13.6% compared with 2024, higher than the regional average for collective tourist accommodation as a whole.

Rural tourism – Overnight stays rose by 4.0%, accounting for 2.3% of collective accommodation in 2025

In 2025, the average number of establishments in operation in rural tourism stood at 70 units, while available accommodation capacity stood at 1 348 beds, 19 more than in 2024. Staff employed numbered around 376 (355 in 2024).
In 2025, 73.9 thousand guest arrivals (+0.2% compared with 2024) and 288.2 thousand overnight stays (2.3% of the total; +4.0% compared with the previous year) were recorded.

Local accommodation – Overnight stays grew by 18.7% compared with 2024, with market share reaching 30%

In this type of establishment, 778.1 thousand guest arrivals were recorded (+19.1% compared with 2024), generating around 3.8 million overnight stays (+18.7% compared with 2024), equivalent to 30.0% of total overnight stays in the ARM's collective tourist accommodation as a whole.

Time-sharing – Overnight stays fell by 8.2% in 2025, totalling 524.5 thousand

In this segment, 54.0 thousand guest arrivals were recorded, 3.3% fewer than in 2024, generating 524.5 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to a decrease of 8.2% compared with the previous year.
Of the total guest arrivals and overnight stays recorded in 2025, around 68.9% and 68.2%, respectively, are already accounted for in hotel establishments, since all timeshare establishments in the tourist residential modality are included in the sample of the Survey on Guest Stays in Hotel Establishments and Other Accommodation (IPHH). The number of establishments operating this modality is, however, determined separately through the Survey on Guest Stays in Timeshare Establishments, developed and carried out by DREM. Thus, in 2025, this segment recorded 16.8 thousand guest arrivals and 166.8 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to an average stay of 7.54 days.

Other types of collective tourist accommodation – Overnight stays in holiday camps and hostels grew by 2.0% in 2025

In 2025, 11.3 thousand guest arrivals were recorded in holiday camps and youth hostels, 2.3% fewer than in 2024, and 38.8 thousand overnight stays, up 2.0% compared with the previous year. The national market accounted for 71.8% of total overnight stays, recording a decrease of 5.0% compared with the previous year.
This year, data on campers are not disclosed as they are subject to statistical confidentiality, since one of the three campsites remained closed for refurbishment works.

Golf – Rounds played on the Region's golf courses grew by 8.0% in 2025

The Golf Courses Survey shows that, in 2025, 85 312 rounds were played on the Region three golf courses, corresponding to an increase of 8.0% compared with 2024. This activity generated around 4.5 million euros in revenue, up 12.9% on the previous year.

Movement of passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports – Cruise ship transit passengers increased by 1.8% in 2025

In the Region, according to data provided by the ARM Port Authority, 331 cruise ships entered in 2025, 15 more than in 2024. There were 729.8 thousand transit passengers, corresponding to an increase of 1.8% compared with 2024, with 80.5% of this movement occurring in the 1st and 4th quarters of the year.
