In the year 2022

Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine increased by 8.4% in value despite the drop of 2.7% in volume

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 3.1 million litres in 2022, which resulted in first sale receipts of 21.0 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there was a drop in volume of 2.7%, but an increase of 8.4% in value. The sales value of Madeira Wine for 2022 is the highest ever and even discounting inflation, in other words, nullifying the effect of price increase, this is a new high since 2002.

In 2022, the national market showed a positive trend, rising by 35.4% in quantity and by 41.9% in value, when compared to 2021. Thus, sales on the national market reached 583.4 thousand litres and yielded a value of approximately 5.3 million euros, of which 463.9 thousand litres and 4.1 million euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Exports to European Union countries amounted to around 1.5 million litres, generating 6.9 million euros, which represent year-on-year changes of -6.7% in volume and of -1.9% in value. Exports to the extra-EU market totalled 933.3 thousand litres, and generated 8.8 million euros in revenue, representing a 11.9% drop in volume but a 2.3% increase in value.

Within the European Union (EU) countries, sales to the French market - which continues to be the most important market within the group of EU countries - showed a slight drop, with changes of -3.1% and -2.4%, in volume and value, respectively. Also, Germany (-13.2%; -12.0%) and Belgium (-25.9%; -6.7%), two other important markets, showed the same trend, with a drop in sales to these markets.

In the extra-EU market, Japan showed a robust growth (+20.8% in quantity and +25.2% in value) in contrast to the United Kingdom (-31.6%; -15.7%). The American market remains the most important market, in terms of value traded (+11.3%), but exports to this country dropped in volume (-15.6%).

Of the total traded, 74.2% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 8.29 euros/litre (7.25 euros/litre in 2021). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.72 euros/litre (0.04 euros/litre more than in the same period last year), extending the trend already seen in the previous quarter.
