Revenue from the first sale of "Madeira" Wine decreased by 1.8%, despite a 5.2% rise in volume

According to data provided by IVBAM - Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, IP-RAM, Madeira wine sales reached approximately 3.1 million litres in 2024, resulting in first-sale revenues amounting to 20.8 million euros. Compared to 2023, there was a 5.2% increase in volume but a 1.8% decrease in value.

In the same year, sales within the national territory recorded positive growth compared to 2023, both in volume (+5.9%) and value (+6.9%).Sales in the national market reached 651.3 thousand litres, generating approximately 6.1 million euros, of which 527.1 thousand litres and 4.9 million euros were sold in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Exports to European Union countries amounted to around 1.5 million litres, generating 6.9 million euros, reflecting year-on-year changes of 1.8% in volume and 0.6% in value. Meanwhile, exports to third countries amounted to 967.8 thousand litres, yielding 7.9 million euros, with an increase of 10.6% in volume and a decrease of 9.3% in value.

Within the non-EU market, the United States, the most relevant market in this category, recorded a 5.8% increase in volume but a 23.4% drop in value. In Japan, a strong growth was observed (+43.7% in volume and +27.8% in value), whereas the United Kingdom witnessed a decline (-4.9% in volume and -18.4% in value).

Of the total volume sold, 76.1% consisted of bottled wine, sold on average at 7.84 euros/litre (8.47 euros/litre in 2023). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.82 euros/litre (0.02 euros/litre higher than in the previous period).

Vinho Generoso EN

Focusing on the fourth quarter of the year, Madeira wine sales totalled 961.1 thousand litres, generating approximately 6.4 million euros in first-sale revenues. Compared to the same period in 2023, both the volume (+14.7%) and the first-sale value (+19.2%) showed positive year-on-year changes.

In 2024, the production of spirits increased in value

In 2024, spirits produced and bottled in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 1,041.0 thousand litres, marking a 1.1% increase from the previous year. Among the various spirit drinks, "Rum da Madeira" was the only one to record growth, rising by 11.3%. In contrast, all other types saw a decline, with "Liqueurs" experiencing the most significant drop (-9.9%).

Regarding market share, "Rum da Madeira" accounted for 60.2% of the total production and bottling in 2024, while liqueurs represented 39.0%, of which 61.4% was "Poncha da Madeira".

Certification of Madeira embroidery decreased compared to 2023

In 2024, the certification of Madeira embroidery generated approximately 510.2 thousand euros in first-sale revenue, a decline of 5.2% compared to 2023.

Of the total certified by IVBAM, 8.7% was exported to the EU-27, 63.6% to third countries, and 27.7% was sold in Portugal.

In the non-EU market, the United States remained the top destination, with sales totalling 266.3 thousand euros (-0.2% compared to the previous year), accounting for 52.2% of the certified embroidery value. The United Kingdom followed with 58.4 thousand euros in sales (+13.2% from the previous period).

Within the EU market, Italy was the only major destination, with sales reaching 44.4 thousand euros (+115.4%).

The regional market saw a decline, with sales dropping to 127.4 thousand euros, down 23.4% from 2023.
