In 2025
Value of Madeira wine sales decreased by 1.2%, while volume fell by 2.6% compared with the previous year
According to data provided by the IVBAM – Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, IP-RAM, in 2025 the commercialisation of Madeira wine amounted to approximately 3.1 million litres, generating a first-sale revenue of around 20.6 million euros. Compared with 2024, a decrease of 2.6% in volume and 1.2% in value was recorded.
In the reference year, sales in the national market showed a negative change compared with 2024, both in volume (-13.8%) and in value (-8.7%). In that year, domestic market sales totalled 561.2 thousand litres, generating approximately 5.6 million euros, of which 468.2 thousand litres and 4.6 million euros corresponded to sales carried out within the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Exports to European Union (EU) countries amounted to around 1.6 million litres, generating revenues of 7.3 million euros, corresponding to positive year-on-year changes of 4.8% in volume and 6.8% in value. In turn, exports to non-EU countries totalled 904.1 thousand litres, producing a revenue of 7.7 million euros and reflecting decreases of 6.6% in volume and 2.5% in value.
Within the EU, particular emphasis is given to the increase in sales to the French market — which remains the most important market globally — with positive year-on-year changes of 5.9% in volume and 14.2% in value. In Germany, the second most important EU market, a decrease in value (-6.4%) was observed alongside an increase in volume (+0.6%). In Belgium, the third most relevant EU market, growth of 21.0% in volume and 7.3% in value was recorded.
In non-EU markets, the United States of America continued to be the most important destination for Madeira wine within this group of countries, recording decreases of 0.8% in volume and 4.5% in value. In the United Kingdom, a reduction of 1.1% in volume was observed, while value increased by 9.8%. In Japan, declines were registered both in volume (-7.1%) and in value (-4.7%).
Of the total volume commercialised, 77.3% corresponded to bottled wine, sold at an average price of 7.88 euros per litre (7.84 euros per litre in 2024). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.84 euros per litre (+0.02 euros per litre compared with 2024).

Narrowing the analysis to the 4th quarter of 2025, the volume of Madeira wine commercialised amounted to 900.5 thousand litres, generating approximately 6.1 million euros in first-sale revenue. Compared with the same period of 2024, both the volume sold and the value of first sales recorded negative year-on-year changes of 6.3% and 4.4%, respectively.
Certification of Madeira embroidery declined compared with 2024
In 2025, the certification of Madeira embroidery generated a first-sale revenue of approximately 446.8 thousand euros, representing a decrease of 12.4% compared with 2024.
In the year under analysis, of the total certified by IVBAM, 7.1% corresponded to exports to the EU-27, 68.2% to exports to non-EU countries and 24.7% to sales within Portugal.
In non-EU markets, particular emphasis is given to the United States, with sales amounting to 227.5 thousand euros (-14.6% compared with the previous year), accounting for 50.9% of the total value of certified embroidery, followed by the United Kingdom, with sales of 75.9 thousand euros (+30.1% year-on-year). Within the EU market, Italy was the only country of relevance (31.5 thousand euros; -29.1% compared with 2024).
The regional market recorded a decrease in sales (-16.5% compared with 2024), amounting to approximately 106.3 thousand euros.
