Six stations recorded maximum temperatures above 25 ºC on every day of the month

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for August 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In August 2024, the highest average temperature (25.0 °C) was recorded at the Santa Catarina/Airport station while the lowest average temperature was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (17.1 °C).

Compared to the climatological normals² for August, all stations for which this information was available (seven stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro standing out with a +2.3 °C deviation from its normal temperature.

Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in August, the highest extreme was observed at the Monte station (33.2 °C on the 18t^h). The lowest extreme was recorded at Pico do Areeiro (4.9 °C on the 30^th). Six stations recorded 31 days with maximum temperatures above 25 ºC, with emphasis on the Porto Santo/Aeroporto station, whose normal value for this season is 15.3 days. With maximum temperatures above 30 ºC, the Monte and Quinta Grande stations (4 days) stood out.

Precipitation

In August 2024, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (21.6 mm). However, the maximum value of daily precipitation (6.2 mm) was observed on the 30^th at Chão do Areeiro.

Compared to the 1961-1990 climatological normal for August, all stations on Madeira Island recorded negative anomalies. Chão do Areeiro station showed an anomaly of -24.6 mm, with the normal being equal to 33.5 mm. Porto Santo/Airport was the only station to register a positive value regarding the August normal (+2.7 mm).

Analysing the days with precipitation (rainy, rainy and very rainy days), it was found that the maximum number of days with rain (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) and rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (16 and 5 days respectively). No station recorded very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more).

Relative Humidity

In August 2024, the average monthly relative humidity ranged from 44% at Pico do Areeiro to 94% in Santo da Serra. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station on the 3^rd and 4^th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at eight stations, on different days of the month.

Wind 

In August 2024, among stations with an anemometer, the Selvagem Grande station recorded the highest average wind intensity (35.4 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (4.1 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 18^th in Pico Alto (92 km/h).

Sunshine duration

The maximum and minimum sunshine duration in August were 293.6 hours in Santa Catarina/Airport³, and 246.8 hours at the Porto Santo, with the normal value for the latter station being 241.4 hours. Funchal/Observatory showed 279.2 hours of sunshine, higher than normal (230.7 hours).

Sea Water Temperature

In August, the average sea water temperature measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 23.6 °C (+1.0 °C than the normal value for this month). The highest average was recorded on the 9^th (24.1 °C) and the lowest (23.1 °C) on the 29^th.

¹ - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

² -The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.

³ - There are no normal values ​​for insolation for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
