Precipitation generally recorded values below the climatological normal

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) publishes today the summary of the main meteorological data for April 2026, while simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA I.P.), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air Temperature

In April, the highest average air temperature was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory station (18.4 °C), while the lowest was observed at the Pico do Areeiro (CFM) station (7.5 °C).

Compared with the climatological normal² for April, the stations with sufficient data series for this analysis generally showed values close to the reference. The Chão do Areeiro station stood out, with an average temperature of 8.2 °C, around 0.8 °C above the respective climatological normal.

Regarding extreme air temperature, the absolute maximum temperature was recorded at the Lugar de Baixo station (31.0 °C, on the 20^th), and the absolute minimum temperature at the Pico do Areeiro (CFM) station (-2.8 °C, on the 8^th).

Precipitation

In April, the highest total precipitation was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro (CFM) meteorological station (140.0 mm), followed by Chão do Areeiro (122.6 mm). In contrast, the lowest monthly value was observed at the Selvagem Grande station (2.1 mm).

Compared with the climatological normal² for April, precipitation generally recorded values below the reference in most stations with available data, with Chão do Areeiro standing out, where 122.6 mm were recorded compared with the climatological normal of 166.6 mm.

Regarding the number of days with precipitation, the Santana station recorded the highest value, with 19 days with precipitation equal to or greater than 0.1 mm. For precipitation equal to or above 1.0 mm, the highest values were observed at the Santana and Santo da Serra stations, both with 12 days.

For precipitation equal to or above 10.0 mm, the maximum value was 4 days, recorded at the Santana and Pico do Areeiro stations. For higher thresholds, the Chão do Areeiro, Pico do Areeiro and Santo da Serra stations stood out, with 2 days of precipitation equal to or above 20.0 mm. Regarding precipitation equal to or above 30.0 mm, the highest values were recorded at the Chão do Areeiro and Pico do Areeiro stations, both with 2 days.

Relative Humidity

In April, the monthly average values of relative air humidity ranged between 58% at the Quinta Grande station and 89% at the Santo da Serra station. The lowest daily relative humidity value was recorded at the Quinta Grande station, with 2% on the 4^th, while the maximum value (100%) was reached at 9 stations on different days of the month.

Wind

In April, among the meteorological stations equipped with an anemometer, the highest average wind speed was recorded at the Selvagem Grande station (30.4 km/h), while the lowest was observed at the Monte station (4.9 km/h). The maximum wind gust was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station, reaching 125 km/h on the 8^th.

Sunshine

In April, 221.5 hours of sunshine were recorded at the Santa Catarina/Airport station, 205.5 hours at the Funchal/Observatory station, and 187.6 hours at the Porto Santo/Airport station.

Sea water

In April, the average sea water temperature, measured at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal), was 17.8 °C. The highest daily average temperature was recorded on the 27^th (18.0 °C), while the lowest (17.6 °C) occurred on the 15^th, 16^th, 23^rd and 24^th of April.
