DREM releases transport statistics for 2019

Land transport - Passengers transported by bus grew over 2018. Acquisition of new cars also increased.

According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), public passenger transport by bus showed a positive change of 3.2% in passengers transported, in 2019, to an overall of 25.2 million passengers. In urban lines, 17.2 million passengers were transported, up by 4.3% compared to 2018, while in intercity lines, 8.0 million passengers used public transportation, a 0.9% growth compared to the preceding year.

In 2019, 942 thousand tickets were sold to users of cable cars of Madeira (+5.1% compared to 2018). 92.8% of these tickets were purchased by adults, 4.2% for children and the remaining 3.0% for other users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc...). Total revenue for the year was approximately € 10.6 million, up by 4.3% compared to 2018.

The information provided by ACAP - Automobile Association of Portugal shows that 4,566 new auto vehicles were purchased in the Region in 2019, representing an increase of 0.9% compared to the previous year. In light passenger vehicles (3,981), there was a 1.1% decrease, while light cargo vehicles (481) rose by 16.5%.

In 2019, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira recorded a transfer of 13,635 used vehicles, a 4.5% drop over 2018.

In 2019, 3,219 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, with the number of victims standing at 1,225 (up by 59 from 2018). Among these, 1,071 were classified as slightly injured, 112 as seriously injured and 42 as dead victims.

Air transport - Passengers in Madeira’s airport increased slightly compared to 2018

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo, recorded a 3.3% drop in the aircraft traffic in 2019, which did not impede a 0.7% growth in passenger movement to an overall total of approximately 3.4 million. At Madeira airport there was an increase of 0.8% in passenger movement and at Porto Santo airport a decrease of 0.9%. The goods traffic in the two airports topped 4.4 thousand tonnes, resulting in an increase of 34.8% compared to the previous year.

Maritime transport - More transit passengers on cruise ships at Madeira’s ports in 2019. Goods movement increased. 

In the field of maritime transport, 298 cruise ships were counted in the seaports of Funchal and Porto Santo in the year of reference, up by 5 ships (+1.7%) when compared to 2018. The number of passengers in transit rose by 9.7% y-o-y. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 585,777 transit passengers, the majority (89.2%) of which were European. Germans were the most common nationality among those who visited Madeira aboard cruise ships  (190,559; up by 18.8%), followed by the British (190,560; -1.5%) and the Italian (19,739; -6.5%).

The passenger movement in Madeira’s ports (Madeira-Porto Santo and Madeira-Portimão-Canarias sea lines) stood at 725.6 thousand (+5.7% comparing to 2018).

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for 2019 show a positive trend vis-a-vis 2018 (+2.6%), with the overall traffic of goods reaching 1.2 million tonnes. This was determined by an increase in both unloaded (+2,8%) and  loaded goods (+0,8%).

In 2019, 2,024 recreational vessels entered the Region’s marinas, representing an increase of 3.1% compared to 2018. These vessels carried 5,557 crew members and passengers, down by 837 from the previous year.
