[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, a total number greater than that of the INE is mentioned concerning guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]
In March 2024, the local accommodation segment distinguished itself within the region's tourist accommodation sector, showing a year-over-year growth of 23.5%
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded the arrival of 181.9 thousand guests in March 2024, with overnight stays surpassing 924.8 thousand, corresponding to positive changes of 6.1% and 7.6%, respectively. During this month, the hotel sector accounted for 71.2% of overnight stays (658.4 thousand), growing by 2.8% year-over-year, while local accommodation (26.3% of the total) and rural tourism (2.5% of the total) increased by 23.5% and 5.8%, respectively.
For comparability with the data published by INE, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. According to this logic of result calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation showed a growth of 4.1% compared to March 2023, mirroring the national trend, albeit less markedly (+12.8%).
The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in March 2024 was 65.1%, 2.0 percentage points (pp) higher than the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate reached 74.1% (74.5% in March 2023). It is important to note that the results may have been slightly influenced by the calendar effect in 2024, as Easter occurred in April 2023 but was celebrated in March 2024.
In March 2024, the average stay in tourist accommodation slightly increased compared to the same month of the previous year (4.51 nights), settling at 4.58 nights. The highest values continue to be recorded in hotels, with 4.65 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.54 nights) and rural tourism (3.32 nights).
In the first three months of 2024, overnight stays in the region's total tourist accommodation saw a 5.6% increase compared to the same period of the previous year, exceeding 2.4 million, while the number of guests increased by 3.6%.
Considering overnight stays, the top 10 source markets accounted for 80.9% of the total in March 2024. Within this group of countries, Germany (23.5% of the total; +3.8% from March 2023) and the United Kingdom (19.2% of the total; +7.3%) stood out with significant positive changes. The national market, which represented 14.4% of the total overnight stays, recorded a 5.3% decrease compared to March 2023. In fourth place, based on the share of total overnight stays, is the French market (5.7% of the total; +6.8%), followed by Poland (5.6% of the total; +18.6%).
Year-to-date (January to March 2024), the two main source markets also showed year-over-year growth in overnight stays, with the British market showing the most significant increase at +7.2%, while the German market grew by 2.1%. However, the market for residents in Portugal showed a negative change of 7.1% for the same period.
Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in March 2024 experienced year-over-year increases of 13.2% and 12.5%, respectively, amounting to 54.5 million euros and 38.6 million euros. Nationally, the year-over-year changes were also positive, with total revenue increasing by 20.1% and revenue from accommodation by 21.1%. Cumulatively, the region saw changes of 11.0% and 10.1%, respectively.
In March 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 71.91 euros, 10.5% higher than the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation increased from 87.34 euros in March 2023 to 97.06 euros in March 2024 (+11.1% year-over-year).
From January to March 2024, the RevPAR in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 60.37 euros, up 6.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 64.73 euros in the hotel sector (+7.4%). In terms of ADR, the values are higher, totalling 89.76 euros in tourist accommodation (+8.5% year-over-year) and 92.51 euros in hotels (+8.9%).

Rounds played on the region's golf courses increased by 6.1% in the first quarter of 2024
The Golf Course Survey indicates that 25,213 rounds were played on the three golf courses in the ARM between January and March 2024 (+6.1% year-over-year), generating approximately 1.2 million euros in revenue. 81.9% of the rounds were played by non-members (80.8% in the first three months of 2023), primarily from the Nordic countries, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Hotels and similar establishments sold 66.1% of the rounds, golf courses sold 21.4%, and the remaining 12.5% were sold by tour operators (in the same order, 51.0%; 29.6%; and 19.4% in the same period of 2023).
Passengers in transit on cruise ships dropped in the first three months of 2024
According to data provided by the Administration of the Ports of the ARM, in the first quarter of this year, 222,225 passengers in transit were counted on the 77 cruise ships that docked at the ARM ports. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there were 17 fewer stops, with a 3.3% decrease in the number of passengers in transit.
