[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, the figures for guests and overnight stays stand above those released by INE. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]

In April 2024

Year-on-year growth in overnight stays was driven by local accommodation and rural tourism

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded the arrival of 197.2 thousand guests in April 2024, with overnight stays surpassing 973.4 thousand, corresponding to positive changes of 2.9% and 4.4%, respectively. During this month, the hotel sector accounted for 69.5% of overnight stays (677.0 thousand), dropping by 0.5% year-on-year, while local accommodation (27.9% of the total) and rural tourism (2.5% of the total) increased by 18.2% and 8.0%, respectively.

For comparability with the data published by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodations with fewer than 10 beds. Following this adjustment, overnight stays in tourist accommodations saw a growth of 0.8% compared to April 2023, contrasting with the national trend (-4.2%). These results may have been influenced by the Easter holiday period spanning March and April, unlike the previous year when it was concentrated solely in April.

The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation for the month under review was 68.9%, 1.3 percentage points (pp) higher than the same month in the previous year (67.6%). Similarly, the room occupancy rate reached 78.1% (77.3% in April 2023).

In April 2024, the average stay in tourist accommodation slightly increased compared to the same month of the previous year (4.43 nights), settling at 4.52 nights. The highest average stays continue to be recorded in hotels, with 4.63 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.40 nights) and rural tourism (3.27 nights).

In the first four months of 2024, total overnight stays in the region's tourist accommodations increased by 5.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, approaching 3.4 million, while the number of guests increased by 3.6%.

It is noteworthy that the top 10 source markets accounted for 80.7% of total overnight stays recorded in April 2024. Significant contributors with increased shares include Germany (20.6% of the total, +2.7% compared to April 2023) and the United Kingdom (16.0%, +5.0%). Conversely, Portugal (13.7% of the total) experienced a decline of 23.3% compared to April 2023. France follows as the fourth largest contributor in total overnight stays (11.3%, +21.5%), followed by Poland (4.8% of the total), which saw a positive year-on-year change of 16.6%.

Cumulatively (January to April 2024), the two main source markets also experienced year-on-year growth in overnight stays, with the British market showing the most significant increase at +6.5%, while the German market grew by 3.0%. However, the market for residents in Portugal (the third largest) showed a negative change of 13.2% for the same period.

Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in April 2024 experienced year-on-year increases of 11.6% and 10.6%, respectively, amounting to 60.1 million euros and 42.5 million euros. Nationally, similar positive year-on-year changes were observed in both total revenue (3.4%) and revenue from accommodation (2.8%) for the month under review. Cumulatively, the region saw changes of 11.0% and 10.0%, respectively.

In April 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 81.61 euros, 9.3% higher than the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation increased from 96.61 euros in April 2023 to 104.46 euros in April 2024 (+8.1% year-on-year).

From January to April 2024, the RevPAR in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 65.58 euros, up 7.2% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 70.15 euros in the hotel sector (+7.8%). In terms of ADR, the figures are higher, totalling 93.32 euros for tourist accommodation (+7.8% year-on-year) and 96.13 euros for hotels (+8.0%).
