DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2023 and updates the Time Series (1976-2023)
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2023. This publication analyses of the main results, summarising the sector's evolution in the specified year. Additionally, the updated Time Series, incorporating the 2023 data, is made available.
Global tourism accommodation sector
- In 2023, the number of overnight stays in the global tourist accommodation sector (including hotel establishments, rural tourism, local accommodation, time-sharing in periodic residence mode, holiday camps, and youth hostels) recorded 2.1 million guests’ entries, resulting in 11.2 million overnight stays. This latter figure represents an increase of 13.7% compared to 2022 and 32.0% compared to 2019. Residents in Portugal contributed approximately 1.7 million overnight stays, a figure very similar to that of 2022, while non-resident foreigners generated around 9.4 million overnight stays, marking an increase of 16.6%.
Tourism accommodation sector
- In 2023, the number of overnight stays in the tourist accommodation sector – hotel establishments, rural tourism, and local accommodation – stood at 11.0 million (+13.9% compared to 2022 and +34.8% compared to 2019).
- Residents in Portugal contributed with 1.7 million overnight stays, indicating a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to 2022. The national market was the third most important, following the German and British markets, representing 15.6% of the total.
- Overnight stays from non-resident foreigners originated around 9.2 million overnight stays (84.4% of the total), corresponding to a 17.0% increase in this variable compared to the previous year. The main markets were Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Czechia, and Denmark, which accounted for 75.2% of overnight stays from non-resident foreigners (77.2% in 2022).
- The annual net bed-occupancy rate in tourist accommodation (excluding local lodging with fewer than 10 beds) reached 65.5%, +3.9 percentage points (pp) compared to 2022 and +7.4 pp to 2019.
- The average length of stay was 4.67 nights, lower than last year (4.80 nights).
- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 73.36 euros for the overall tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds), +22.6% compared to 2022 and +65.6% to 2019.
- The average daily rate (ADR) for tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds), was 96.60 euros in 2023, up by 14.1% compared to the previous year and +40.3% to 2019.
Hotel establishments
- In 2023, the hotel establishments recorded 1.5 million guest entries and approximately 8.1 million overnight stays, growing by 8.5% compared to 2022, and accounted for 74.0% of the overnight stays in tourist accommodation.
- Total revenue and revenue from accommodation for this segment increased by 21.8% and 24.7%, respectively, compared to 2022 (+57.4% and 68.5% compared to 2019, respectively).
- Overnight stays by non-resident foreigners surpassed 6.8 million (84.0% of the total hotel stays), growing by 10.9% compared to the previous year. The United Kingdom was the main market (with a share of 23.1% of the total), followed by Germany (with a share of 20.2% of the total). When compared to the evolution of these two markets, the German market showed a higher growth rate of +13.1% compared to 2022, while the British market registered an increase of only 3.2%.
- Residents in Portugal produced 1.3 million overnight stays (-2.7% compared to 2022), representing 16.0% of the total hotel overnight stays. The Portuguese market also stood out in this segment as the third most important, followed by the German and the British markets.
- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 68.0%, growing by 4.0 percentage points from 2022 (+6.1 p.p. compared to 2019).
- The average length of stay was 4.75 nights, slightly lower than the previous year (4.87 nights).
- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 78.15 euros (+22.5% compared to 2022) and the average daily rate (ADR) stood at 99.40 euros (+14.1% compared to 2022).
Rural tourism
- In 2023, the average number of establishments operating in rural tourism was 63, generating 255.1 thousand overnight stays (2.3% of the total tourist accommodation), representing an increase of 19.5% compared to 2022 and a growth of 61.3% compared to 2019.
Local Accommodation
- This type of establishment registered 532.1 thousand guests’ entries (+39.9% compared to 2022), which resulted in 2.6 million overnight stays, representing an increase of 34.1% compared to 2022 and 111.8% compared to 2019.
Time-sharing
- This segment saw 53.7 thousand guest entries (-10.1% compared to 2022). Overnight stays totalled 570.8 thousand, decreasing by 8.4% compared to 2022 and 8.6% compared to 2019.
- Of the total guest entries and overnight stays, about 67.5% and 65.5%, respectively, are already accounted for in the hotel establishments, as all time-sharing establishments in the "tourist housing" mode are included in the sample of the Survey on Guest Stays in Hotels and Other Accommodation. The total number of establishments practising that mode, surveyed autonomously by DREM (Survey on Guest Stays in Time-sharing Establishments), accounted for 17.5 thousand guest entries and 196.9 thousand overnight stays in 2023, with an average stay of 8.15 days.
Other types of tourist accommodation
- In 2023, there were 36,143 overnight stays in holiday camps and youth hostels, representing an increase of 27.3% compared to 2022 and 52.3% compared to 2019. The Portuguese market accounted for 74.3% of these overnight stays (+34.2% compared to 2022).
- The three camping parks in the Autonomous Region of Madeira received 4,866 campers, producing 11,481 overnight stays in the analysed year.
Golf
- The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2023, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 75,072 (+8.3% compared to 2022 and +14.8% compared to 2019), generating approximately 3.8 million euros in revenue.
Movement of passengers on cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports
- In the Region, according to data provided by the Ports Authority, in 2023, 279 cruise ships entered the Region (44 fewer than in 2022), with 615.7 thousand transit passengers (+50.1% compared to 2022 and +4.5% compared to 2019), with 92.3% of this movement occurring in the 1st and 3rd quarters of the year.
