[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, a total number greater than that of the INE is mentioned concerning guests and overnight stays. For the occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]
In June 2024
Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in the tourist accommodation sector in the Region grew above the national average
In June 2024, the tourist accommodation sector of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded the arrival of 200.4 thousand guests with the overnight stays surpassing 1 049.5 thousand, corresponding to year-on-year increases of 4.0% and 7.8%, respectively. During this month, the hotel sector accounted for 70.6% of overnight stays (740.8 thousand), growing by 1.8% year-over-year, while local accommodation (27.0% of the total) and rural tourism (2.4% of the total) saw increases of 26.6% and 14.3%, respectively.
For comparability with the data published by Statistics Portugal, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. When applying this method, overnight stays in the tourist accommodation sector experienced a growth of 3.3% compared to June 2023, a positive change like the one recorded in the country (+4.8%).
The net bed occupancy rate for the tourist accommodation sector in June 2024 was 72.6%, 2.5 percentage points (pp) higher than the same month in the previous year (70.1%). Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate reached 81.6% (81.3% in June 2023).
In June 2024, the average stay in the tourist accommodation sector increased compared to the same month of the previous year (4.54 nights), settling at 4.69 nights. The highest values continue to be recorded in the hotel sector, with 4.83 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.50 nights) and rural tourism (3.49 nights).
The cumulative number of guests for the period from January to June 2024 (1,064.7 thousand; +4.8% compared to the same period in 2023) also shows growth, as do overnight stays, which approached 5.5 million (+6.6% compared to the same period in 2023).
Considering overnight stays, the top 10 source markets accounted for 84.5% of the total in June 2024. Within this group of countries, Germany (19.1% of the total; +8.1% from June 2023) and Portugal (16.9% of the total; +4.4% from June 2023) stood out with positive changes. On the other hand, the United Kingdom (18.0% of the total) recorded a decline of 2.3% compared to June 2023. In fourth place, based on the share of total overnight stays, is the French market (9.1% of the total; +19.8%), followed by the Netherlands (5.9% of the total, +35.7%).
Year-to-date (January to June 2024), the two main source markets also showed year-over-year growth in overnight stays, with the German market showing the most significant increase at +4.3%, while the British market grew by 2.9%. However, the market for residents in Portugal showed a negative change of 1.6% for the same period.
Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in June 2024 experienced year-over-year growth of 15.6% and 16.2%, respectively, amounting to 69.1 million euros and 48.8 million euros. Nationally, the year-over-year changes were also positive, for both total revenue and revenue from accommodation (both at +12.7%). Cumulatively, the region saw changes of 13.7% and 13.5%, respectively.
In June 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the tourist accommodation sector (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 90.92 euros, +13.7% higher than the same month in the previous year. The average daily rate per occupied room (ADR) in the tourist accommodation sector increased from 98.36 euros in June 2023 to 111.47 euros in June 2024 (+13.3% year-over-year).
From January to June 2024, RevPAR in the tourist accommodation sector (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 74.36 euros, up 10.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 79.61 euros in the hotel sector (+11.7%). In terms of ADR, the values are higher, totalling 100.38 euros in tourist accommodation (+10.9% year-over-year) and 103.53 euros in hotels (+11.4%).
Number of rounds played on the Region's Golf Courses in the 1st half of 2024 grew by 9.0% year-on-year
The Golf Course Survey reveals a total of 43,480 rounds were played on the three golf courses in the ARM during the 1st half of 2024, which marks a +9.0% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. This activity generated approximately 2.3 million euros in revenue. Non-members made up 77.9% of the rounds played, mostly originating from Nordic countries, Germany and the United Kingdom. Hotels and similar establishments facilitated 63.7% of these rounds, golf courses accounted for 25.2%, and the remaining 11.2% were booked through tour operators.
Approximately 337.4 thousand transit passengers from cruise ships arrived at the ports of the ARM in the first half of 2024
According to data provided by the Administration of the Ports of the ARM, there were 337,431 transit passengers on 139 cruise ships that docked at ARM ports during the 1st half of this year, an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period the previous year.
