[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its release, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco", and in the tables released by DREM, a total number greater than that of the INE is mentioned concerning guests and overnight stays. For occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.

In July 2024

Local accommodation and rural tourism stood out, with growth in overnight stays exceeding the regional average

In July 2024, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), the tourist accommodation sector recorded the arrival of 211.9 thousand guests, with overnight stays surpassing 1 169.8 thousand, corresponding to positive changes of 4.9% and 6.0%, respectively. During this month, the hotel sector accounted for 68.4% of overnight stays (799.6 thousand), decreasing by 1.8% year-over-year, while local accommodation (29.3% of the total) and rural tourism (2.3% of the total) increased by 29.3% and 11.5%, respectively.

For comparability with the data published by Statistics Portugal, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. According to this criterion, overnight stays in the tourist accommodation sector showed a positive change of +0.3% compared to July 2023, a positive change like the one recorded in the country (+2.1%).

The net bed occupancy rate for the tourist accommodation sector in July 2024 was 72.3%, 0.4 percentage points (pp) lower than the same month in the previous year (72.7%). Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate reached 82.4% (82.8% in July 2023).

In July 2024, the average stay in the tourist accommodation sector increased slightly compared to the same month of the previous year (4.91 nights), settling at 4.97 nights. The highest values continue to be recorded in hotels, with 5.05 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.95 nights) and rural tourism (3.51 nights).

The cumulative number of guests, for the period from January to July 2024 (1,277.5 thousand; +4.9% than in the same period of 2023), also grew, as the overnight stays, which approached 6.7 million (+6.6% than in the same period of 2023).

Considering overnight stays, the top 10 source markets accounted for 82.4% of the total in July 2024. Within this group of countries, Germany (17.0% of the total; +7.0% from July 2023) and Portugal (16.1%; +4.8%) stood out with significant positive changes. On the other hand, the United Kingdom (15.9% of the total) recorded a slight drop of 8.8% when compared to July 2023. In fourth place, based on the share of total overnight stays, is the French market (8.3% of the total; +15.6%), followed by Poland (6.1%; +10.5%) and the Netherlands (5.7%; +31.6%).

Year-to-date (January to July 2024), the two main source markets also showed year-over-year growth in overnight stays, with the German market showing the most significant increase at +4.8%, while the British market grew by 1.0%. However, the market for residents in Portugal (third main market) showed a negative change of 1.1% for the same period.

Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in July 2024 experienced year-over-year increases of 14.8% and 18.9%, respectively, amounting to 80.1 million euros and 59.3 million euros. Nationally, the year-over-year changes were also positive, with total revenue increasing by 7.2% and revenue from accommodation by 7.7%. Cumulatively, the region saw changes of 14.0% and 14.7%, respectively.

In July 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the tourist accommodation sector (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 106.42 euros, +16.3% higher than the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, the average daily rate (ADR) in the tourist accommodation sector increased from 110.52 euros in July 2023 to 129.14 euros in July 2024 (+16.8% year-over-year).

From January to July 2024, the RevPAR in the tourist accommodation sector (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 79.20 euros, up 11.6% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 85.05 euros in the hotel sector (+12.8%). In terms of ADR, the values are higher, totalling 105.08 euros in the tourist accommodation sector (+12.0% year-over-year) and 108.80 euros in hotels (+12.7%).
