    Year of publication: 2025

    Reference period: December 2024

[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2025, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is aligned with Statistics Portugal (INE) in the simultaneous release of the full set of variables concerning tourist accommodation, now carried out at the end of month n+1. While, for 2024, such dissemination already occurred within this timeframe for guests and overnight stays, the publication of results for occupancy rates and revenue indicators was only available 45 days after the reference period. From 2025 onwards, a single release moment per month is in place, with the data being preliminary in nature. Moreover, DREM continues to publish an aggregate comprising hotels, rural tourism and all local accommodation, regardless of bed capacity. Statistics Portugal, by contrast, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Consequently, in this release, in Em Foco, and in the statistical tables published by DREM, the overall totals of guests and overnight stays are higher than those of Statistics Portugal. However, regarding occupancy rates, rooms, revenue and staff costs, the figures are identical to those of Statistics Portugal, as their compilation excludes local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds.]

In 2025
Overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 8.4%, approaching 12.8 million

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the tourist accommodation registered 156.8 thousand guests in December 2025, generating 808.0 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to positive year-on-year changes of 5.8% and 1.9%, respectively. The hotel segment accounted for 67.9% of overnight stays (548.6 thousand), declining by 1.7% year-on-year. Local accommodation (30.2% of the total) increased by 11.8%, while rural tourism (1.9%) decreased by 7.3%.

For comparability with data published by INE, local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 bed places must be excluded. Under this methodological approach, overnight stays in tourist accommodation registered a year-on-year decrease of 2.1%, in contrast with the national trend (+3.0%).

In December, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays were recorded in Centro (+8.4%), Oeste e Vale do Tejo (+5.7%) and Norte (+5.2%). Conversely, the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira recorded decreases of 4.5% and 2.1%, respectively.

The net bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the Region stood at 52.8% in the reference month, down by 1.6 percentage points (pp) compared with the same month of the previous year (54.5%). The room occupancy rate reached 61.1% (62.6% in December 2024).

In December 2025, the average length of stay in the tourist accommodation was 4.70 nights (4.77 in December 2024). The highest values continued to be observed in local accommodation (4.84 nights) and hotels (4.67 nights), followed by rural tourism, which recorded the lowest average stay (3.89 nights).

In cumulative terms for 2025, total guests staying in tourist accommodation in the Region amounted to 2 441.5 thousand, representing an increase of 9.4% compared with the previous year. Overnight stays also increased by 8.4% compared with 2024, approaching 12.8 million. At the national level, overnight stays grew by 2.2%.

It should be noted that the ten main source markets accounted for 80.9% of the total overnight stays recorded in December 2025. The main markets were Germany (22.0% of the total; -0.4% compared with December 2024), the United Kingdom (18.3%; -1.4%) and Portugal (17.3%; +10.9%). In fourth position, in terms of share, was the Polish market (7.7%; -3.9%), followed by the Dutch market (3.6%; +17.4%).

In cumulative terms for 2025, the two main international source markets recorded year-on-year changes in opposite directions: the German market increased by 0.9%, while the British market declined by 1.2%. The Portuguese resident market, the second largest market in this period, recorded the most significant positive change compared with 2024 (+33.9%).

In December 2025, total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded year-on-year increases of 6.9% and 8.9%, respectively, amounting to 60.5 million euros and 41.9 million euros. At the national level, in the same month, total revenues also recorded a positive year-on-year change, though less pronounced (+6.6%), as did accommodation revenues (+5.7%). In cumulative terms, revenue growth in the Region amounted to +17.4% for total revenue and +18.9% for accommodation revenue, totalling 893.7 million euros and 642.7 million euros, respectively, in 2025.

Average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation rose from 112.34 euros in December 2024 to 124.28 euros in December 2025, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of 10.6%.

In 2025, RevPAR for total tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 bed places) stood at 97.61 euros, representing an increase of 16.8% compared with 2024. In the hotel sector, RevPAR reached 104.83 euros, corresponding to a rise of 17.2%. As regards ADR, higher values were recorded, amounting to 125.11 euros in overall tourist accommodation (+14.5% compared with 2024) and 128.99 euros in hotels (+14.5%).
