[NOTE: Regarding the monthly release for the 2026 reference year, DREM maintains the same model as the previous year, publishing an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. In turn, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its release, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, which is why, in this news item, in the Em Foco section and in the tables published by DREM, a higher overall total is mentioned compared to INE, with regard to guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms and revenues, the values coincide with those of INE due to the fact that their calculation excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]

In April 2026

Overnight stays in the Region's tourist accommodation grew 4.2% year-on-year, surpassing 1.1 million

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded, in April 2026, the arrival of 238.8 thousand guests, who generated 1 141.1 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year changes of +7.4% and +4.2%, respectively. The hotel segment concentrated 63.6% of overnight stays (725.3 thousand), growing 0.4% year-on-year. Local accommodation (34.2% of the total) rose 13.1%, while rural tourism (2.3% of the total) fell 7.7%.

For comparability purposes with data released by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, and according to this calculation methodology, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year change of -0.1%, a trend opposite to that observed at the national level (+0.6%).

In April, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays continued to be recorded in Alentejo (+8.4%) and Norte (+4.1%). It should be noted that the 10 main source markets represented 80.4% of total overnight stays recorded in April 2026. Standing out with a higher share were Germany (19.9% of the total; +6.1% compared to April 2025), Portugal (17.7%; +14.3%) and the United Kingdom (13.0%; -6.5%).
