[NOTE: With regard to the monthly release for reference year 2026, DREM maintains the previous year's model, releasing an aggregate that comprises hotels, rural tourism accommodation and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Statistics Portugal (INE), in turn, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds from its release, so this news release, the Em Foco publication and the tables published by DREM show an overall total higher than that of Statistics Portugal (INE) in respect of guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms and revenue, the figures coincide with those of Statistics Portugal (INE), since their calculation excludes local accommodation with a capacity of fewer than 10 beds.]

In May 2026

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Region increased by 2.1% year-on-year, and revenue grew by 5.2%

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation registered, in May 2026, the arrival of 247.0 thousand guests, who generated 1 180.3 thousand overnight stays, representing year-on-year changes of +4.7% and +2.1%, respectively. The hotel segment accounted for 64.1% of overnight stays (756.8 thousand), decreasing by 2.2% year-on-year. Local accommodation (33.6% of the total) rose by 11.9%, while rural tourism accommodation (2.3% of the total) fell by 1.8%.

For comparability with the figures released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds; according to this method of calculating results, overnight stays in tourist accommodation registered a year-on-year change of -2.2%, a change contrary to that observed at the national level (+2.8%).

In the reference month, considering the NUTS 2 regions, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays were again recorded in Alentejo (+10.0%) and Norte (+6.7%). In turn, the largest decreases were observed in the ARM and in Oeste e Vale do Tejo (-2.2% and -1.5%, respectively). Algarve (26.3%), Grande Lisboa (23.6%) and Norte (19.1%) together accounted for 69.0% of total overnight stays.

In the first five months of 2026, guests arriving at tourist accommodation in the Region as a whole totalled 1 006.4 thousand, representing an increase of 7.9% compared with the same period the previous year. Overnight stays also increased by 2.8% compared with the same period of 2025, standing at 5.0 million.

The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in the Region, in the month in question, was 67.6%, down 4.9 percentage points (pp) compared with the same month the previous year (72.5%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 79.3% (83.3% in May 2025).

In May 2026, the average length of stay across tourist accommodation as a whole stood at 4.31 nights, below the 4.45 nights recorded in May 2025. Hotels showed the highest average length of stay (4.35 nights), followed by local accommodation (4.33 nights). Rural tourism accommodation registered the lowest average length of stay, standing at 3.36 nights.

It should be noted that the 10 main source markets accounted for 82.5% of total overnight stays recorded in May 2026. Germany remained the main source market, accounting for 19.1% of total overnight stays (+4.5% compared with May 2025), followed by Portugal (17.1%; +13.8%) and the United Kingdom (14.0%; -11.0%). France came fourth, with a share of 10.2% (-2.0%), followed by the Netherlands (6.2%; +7.2%) and Poland (5.9%; +2.9%).

In May 2026, total revenue and revenue from accommodation registered year-on-year growth of 5.2% and 6.4%, respectively, standing, in the same order, at 87.8 million euros and 64.2 million euros. For the country as a whole, in the same month, total revenue and revenue  from accommodation likewise registered year-on-year growth, standing at +5.8% and +4.8%, respectively.

In cumulative terms, in the Region, total revenue and revenue from accommodation registered changes of +9.1% and +8.7%, respectively, totalling, from January to May 2026, 346.1 million euros and 247.4 million euros.

From January to May 2026, RevPAR across tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) stood at 89.84 euros, representing an increase of 5.5% compared with the same period the previous year. In hotels, RevPAR was 96.81 euros, corresponding to a rise of 6.2%.
