[NOTE: With regard to the monthly release for reference year 2026, DREM maintains the same model as the previous year, releasing an aggregate that comprises hotels, rural tourism accommodation and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Statistics Portugal (INE), in turn, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds in its release, so in this news item, in the Focus section and in the tables published by DREM, a higher overall total than that of INE is mentioned with regard to guests and overnight stays. For the variables occupancy rates, rooms and revenue, the figures coincide with those of INE, since their calculation excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]

In June 2026
Overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Region decreased by 0.7% year-on-year, while total revenue grew by 5.6%

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded, in June 2026, the arrival of 231.2 thousand guests, who generated 1 146.2 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year changes of +2.6% and -0.7%, respectively. The hotel segment accounted for 66.1% of total overnight stays (757.6 thousand), decreasing by 3.4% year-on-year. In turn, the number of overnight stays in local accommodation (31.8% of the total) rose by 5.8%, while rural tourism accommodation (2.1% of the total) fell by 8.7% year-on-year.

For comparability purposes with the data released by Statistics Portugal, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds; according to this calculation method, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year change of -3.3%, contrary to the change observed at the national level (+0.7%).

In June, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays were recorded in Norte (+4.8%), Grande Lisboa (+2.3%) and Alentejo (+2.1%). In turn, the Oeste e Vale do Tejo and the Autonomous Region of Madeira saw the largest decreases (-6.6% and -3.3%, respectively). Algarve (29.1%), Grande Lisboa (22.2%) and Norte (17.9%) together accounted for 69.2% of total overnight stays.

In the first six months of 2026, guests arriving at tourist accommodation in the Region as a whole totalled 1 237.9 thousand, representing growth of 6.9% compared with the same period of the previous year. Overnight stays also increased by 2.2% compared with the same period of 2025, standing at 6.1 million.

The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in the Region, in the reference month, was 67.3%, down by 7.2 percentage points (pp) from the same month of the previous year (74.5%). The room occupancy rate, in turn, stood at 78.8% (85.0% in June 2025).

In June 2026, the average length of stay across all tourist accommodation in the ARM stood at 4.49 nights, below the 4.59 nights recorded a year earlier. Hotels recorded the highest average length of stay (4.53 nights), followed by local accommodation (4.50 nights). Rural tourism accommodation recorded the lowest average length of stay, at 3.55 nights.

It should be noted that the top 10 source markets accounted for 83.2% of total overnight stays recorded in June 2026. In this month, Portugal was the leading source market, accounting for 20.5% of total overnight stays (+7.6% compared with the same period of the previous year). This was the first time in 2026 that the domestic market took the lead among the main source markets, a position it had already held in June, July and August 2025. It was followed by Germany (17.1%; -6.2%) and the United Kingdom (15.3%; -9.6%). France ranked fourth, with a share of 8.8% of total overnight stays (+6.9%), followed by Poland (5.9%; -5.5%) and the Netherlands (5.7%; +6.8%).

In June 2026, total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded year-on-year growth of 5.6% and 5.1%, respectively, standing, in the same order, at 86.9 million euros and 61.7 million euros. For the country as a whole, in the same month, total revenue and revenue from accommodation also recorded year-on-year growth, standing at +4.7% and +4.5%, respectively.

On a cumulative basis, in the Region, total revenue and revenue from accommodation recorded changes of +8.4% and +7.9%, respectively, totalling, from January to June 2026, 433.0 million euros and 309.0 million euros, in the same order.

The average daily rate (ADR), in turn, rose from 126.41euros in June 2025 to 138.90 euros in June 2026 (+9.9% year-on-year change).

From January to June 2026, RevPAR across tourist accommodation as a whole (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) stood at 93.14 euros, representing an increase of 4.7% compared with the same period of the previous year. In hotels, RevPAR was 100.56 euros, corresponding to a year-on-year rise of 5.5%. As for ADR, the figures were higher, standing at 126.74 euros (+9.7% compared with the same period of the previous year) and 132.19 euros in hotels (+11.1%).
