In 2025

Combined value of cash withdrawals and purchases carried out through automatic payment terminals of the SIBS network in the Region increased by 7.3%, exceeding 3.1 billion euros

In 2025, the amounts relating to the two main operations of the SIBS network (cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals – APT), considered jointly, reached a total of 3 124.5 million euros (representing 2.7% of the national total), corresponding to an annual increase of 7.3% (+4.8% nationwide).

This amount includes 2 388.6 million euros in transactions carried out with national cards, up 6.8% over the prior year (+4.8% nationwide), and 735.9 million euros in transactions with international cards, representing an annual increase of 8.9% (+4.2% nationwide).

Cash withdrawals totalled 730.9 million euros, of which 699.3 million euros were made with national cards and 61.6 million euros with international cards, corresponding to annual decreases of 2.6%, 2.7% and 2.2%, respectively. At the national level, the same downward trend was observed, with declines of 4.6%, 4.5% and 6.9%, respectively.

In turn, purchases made through automatic payment terminals (APT) amounted to approximately 2 393.6 million euros, comprising 1 719.3 million euros in transactions with national cards and 674.3 million euros with international cards. Compared with 2024, the changes were positive, standing at 10.8%, 11.0% and 10.1%, respectively. At the national level, increases of the same sign were recorded, at 8.3%, 8.6% and 6.1%, respectively.

Payments totalled 208.4 million euros, corresponding to an annual increase of 10.5% (+31.6% nationwide).

Operacoes SIBS EN

An analysis of the combined value of cash withdrawals and purchases through APT by municipality shows that Funchal recorded 1 884.8 million euros, accounting for 60.3% of the regional total (61.3% in 2024). At the opposite end, Porto Moniz registered the lowest amount, with 30.7 million euros.

In terms of growth compared with the previous year, Porto Moniz stood out with the highest increase (+27.5%), while São Vicente recorded the lowest growth rate (+1.6%). In Funchal, the change stood at +5.6%.

Focusing the analysis on the fourth quarter of 2025, the combined value of cash withdrawals and purchases through APT amounted to 808.7 million euros, comprising 187.6 million euros in cash withdrawals and 621.1 million euros in purchases through APT. These figures correspond to year-on-year changes of +4.4%, -5.0% and +7.6%, respectively.

Analysing total purchases by type — in-store and online — year-on-year increases of 10.5% and 15.5% were observed, respectively, with online purchases accounting for 5.7% of the total.

In 2025, purchases carried out through APT were mainly concentrated in the sectors of “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (57.3% of the total) and “Accommodation and food service activities” (22.9%). In these sectors, year-on-year increases of 11.9% and 7.1% were recorded, respectively.

Cash withdrawals and purchases through APT reached 69.8 million euros in the week from 8 to 14 December 2025

Given that the level of detail available allows for a more refined analysis of the evolution of amounts processed through the SIBS network, DREM presents, as in previous years, an analysis covering the period between the first week of November and the end of the year, as this is a particularly intense period in terms of purchasing activity.

Contrary to tradition, in 2025, neither the Black Friday week nor the week preceding Christmas recorded the highest amounts of cash withdrawals and purchases through APT during the pre-Christmas period.

During the Black Friday week (week 48, from 24 to 30 November), the amount processed totalled 64.1 million euros, registering decreases compared with both the previous week (-4.5%) and the corresponding week of 2024 (-1.1%).

The same occurred in the week preceding Christmas (week 51, from 15 to 21 December), with the amount processed (59.2 million euros) also recording decreases compared with the previous week (-15.1%) and the corresponding week of the previous year (-15.4%).

The week with the highest amount processed was week 50 (from 8 to 14 December), during which approximately 69.8 million euros were recorded, representing an increase of 19.7% compared with the previous week and 12.2% compared with the corresponding week of the previous year.

Finally, during Christmas week (week 52, the last week of 2025), the amount processed was 2.9% higher than in the previous week, with total cash withdrawals and purchases through APT reaching 60.9 million euros.

DREM updates the time series on SIBS network operations

Following the close of 2025, DREM updated the time series relating to the SIBS network, in most cases with data beginning in 1997. Information is available on operations, cash withdrawals, balance enquiries, payments and purchases through APT, as well as on the number of terminals and Multibanco machines.
