In the 1^st quarter of 2022

Estimated unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 7.5%

The Labour Force Survey results, for the 1^st quarter of 2022, indicate that the unemployment rate for the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 7.5%. This value increased by 0.9 percentage points (pp) when compared to the previous quarter and decreased by 2.1 pp from the same quarter of last year. Compared to the 4^th quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic COVID-19 period), the increase was 0.1 pp.

The estimated unemployed population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 9.8 thousand persons, dropping by 20.7% from the same quarter of last year (2.5 thousand persons) and rose by 15.3%, compared to the previous quarter (1.3 thousand persons).

The employment rate of the population was estimated at 121.1 thousand persons, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.0% (4.7 thousand) and a quarterly growth of 0.6% (0.7 thousand).

The activity rate of working-age people (aged 16 to 89), in the 1^st quarter of 2022, was estimated at 60.2%, up by 0.7 pp to the same quarter of last year and 0.9 pp. from the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 56.5%, lower than that of men (64.4%) by 7.9 pp.

The inactive population stood at 122.2 thousand persons in the reference quarter, decreasing by 1.8% quarter-on-quarter and from the previous quarter.

The unemployment rate for Portugal decreased by 5.9%, - 0.4 pp from the previous quarter and by 1.2 pp from the same quarter of the previous year.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira (7.5%) and Algarve (7.0%) recorded the highest unemployment rates in the reference quarter, with Alentejo (5.1%), Norte (5.4%) and Centro (5.4%) having the lowest rates.

In four of the 7 NUTS2 regions of the country, the unemployment rate decreased in quarterly terms, with the largest falls being registered in the Autonomous Region of Azores (-1.6 pp) and in Norte (-1.1 pp). In year-on-year terms, the rate of unemployment decreased in all regions of the country. Algarve was the region with the largest change (-3.2 pp) followed by Autonomous Region of Madeira (2.1%).
