DREM starts a monthly release of air transport flash statistics

Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases, starting today (October 20th - European Statistics Day), the monthly statistics of air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

In this release, concerning the month of August 2022, the monthly data of aircraft and passenger movements are presented, broken down by domestic and international traffic. Passengers’ movement is also broken down by main countries of origin and destination. An indicator of the average occupancy of aircraft is also now available.

The data now released were provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal and by its office in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), to whom we are grateful for their cooperation and availability to answer the requests and questions of DREM, allowing us to take this new step in the dissemination of Air Transport Statistics.

In August 2002, the following results are highlighted:

- There was a movement of 457.5 thousand passengers, transported in 3 116 aircraft (commercial flights) at the airports of the ARM, representing year-on-year changes of 38.5% and 24.8%, respectively. When compared to August 2019 (pre-pandemic), there was also a growth, of 32.2% in the movement of passengers and 24.8% (identical to the same period of the previous year) in the movement of aircraft;

- 151 passengers travelled on average per aircraft (137 in August 2021), at Madeira airport, while at Porto Santo airport that figure did not exceed 112 passengers (96 in the same month last year);

- In this month, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered very similar positive changes, of 37.8% and 39.3%, respectively. Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), domestic traffic grew by 43.4% and international by 22.5%;

- At Madeira Airport, passenger traffic was distributed almost equally between domestic traffic (47.7% of the total) and international traffic (52.3%), a trend that has been observed since July 2021, related to the recovery of demand for international flights. At Porto Santo Airport, there was a significant predominance of domestic traffic, with values greater than three-quarters of the total traffic (83.1% of the total);

- In August 2022, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 88.1%, with Madeira Airport reaching 89.0% and Porto Santo 78.8%. During the same period last year, the occupancy rate was slightly lower, 81.7%, 82.4% and 75.0%, by the same order;

- In the first eight months of 2022, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of ARM (35.6% of the total), followed by Germany (22.9%) and France (8.2%);

- In the IATA (International Air Transport Association) winter season, from 31st October 2021 to 26th March 2022, Madeira airport provided commercial flights of 25 airlines, with 48 routes to 44 destinations. At Porto Santo airport, commercial flights were operated with a single route, by one airline and with one destination.
