In September 2022
Passengers’ movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports stood 30.0% above the same month of 2019
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of September 2022.
In the month in reference, 402.1 thousand passengers, were transported in 2,909 aircraft (commercial flights) at the airports of the ARM, representing year-on-year changes of 41.1% and 32.7%, respectively. When compared to September 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also a 30.0% growth in the movement of passengers and of 27.2% in the movement of aircrafts. Year to date (January to September), the year-on-year changes in aircraft and passenger movements were 81.6% and 134.0%, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 143 passengers (136 in September 2021) at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo airport, that figure did not exceed 97 passengers (84 in the same month last year).

In September 2022, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with domestic traffic growing more (+44.7%) than international (+37.5%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), domestic traffic grew by 34.6% and international traffic by 25.6%.
At Madeira airport, passenger traffic is distributed equally between domestic (48.2% of the total) and international traffic (51.8%), a trend that has been recorded since July 2021, related to the demand recovery for international flights. At Porto Santo Airport there was a significant predominance of domestic traffic, with values greater than four-fifths of total traffic (82.2% of the total).
In this reference month, regularly scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 92.4% of all aircraft movements and 93.7% of passengers (88.2% and 89.7% in the same period last year, respectively).
In September 2022, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 83.1%, with Madeira Airport reaching 84.0% and Porto Santo 72.2%. During the same period last year, the occupancy rate was slightly lower, 81.2%, 82.1% and 70.3%, by the same order.
In the first nine months of 2022, passengers embarked and disembarked in Madeira airports reached 1.5 million, half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes internal and domestic connections (49.8% of the total as a whole) and the other half international (50.2%). Under the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of the ARM (35.9%), followed by Germany (22.7%) and France (8.3%).
