DREM releases the third quarter transport statistics and a time series for the period 1976-2021

Land transport - Passengers carried by buses in the 3rd quarter of 2022 grew year-on-year, as did the registrations of transfers of used cars

According to the data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in the first nine months of the year, public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 18.1 million users, an increase of 26.0% year-on-year. In urban lines, 11.3 million passengers were transported between January to September 2022, +27.5% compared to the same period in 2021 and -11.6% compared to the same period in 2019. In interurban lines, 6.7 million passengers were carried by bus, a growth of 23.5% vis-a-vis the same period last year. In the 3rd quarter of 2022, 6.1 million passengers were transported in urban lines (+13.6% compared to 2021), with 3.9 million passengers in urban lines (+14.4% compared to the same period of 2021, -8.7% compared to the same quarter of 2019) and 2.2 million passengers in intercity lines (+12.1% compared to the last quarter of 2021).

In the first nine months of 2022, about 791.9 thousand tickets were sold by cableways installed in the Region (+152.5% than in the same period of 2021; +9.3% compared to the same period of 2019), 92.1% were for adults, 5.5% for children and the remaining 2.5% for other users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc.). For the first nine months of the year, total revenue stood at approximately 9.8 million euros, a 219.2% growth year-on-year (+20.3% compared to the same period of 2019). It should be noted that in the 3rd quarter of 2022 there were considerable year-on-year increases in tickets sold (+35.3%) and revenues (+72.0%), but compared to the same period in 2019, the increases were less sharp, of 25.5% and 49.6% by the same order.

Moreover, the Registers of the Region recorded, in the 3rd quarter of 2022, the transfer of ownership of 3,676 used vehicles, 87.9% of which were passenger cars and 11.3% were cargo vehicles. There were also 27 heavy vehicles registered, representing 0.7% of the total. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2021, the number of registrations increased by 1,390, meaning a year-on-year increase of 60.8% (+5.4% compared to the same period in 2019). For the first nine months of 2022, 10,652 used vehicles changed ownership, representing a 37.4% growth when compared to the same period in 2021 and +4.8% towards 2019.  

According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal - from the Institute of Records and Notary, in the first nine months of 2022, a total of 4,046 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which resulted in an increase of 501 vehicles (+14.1% compared to the same period in 2021 and +16.7% compared to 2019). In the 3rd quarter of 2022, 1,608 new vehicles were acquired, which compared to the same period in 2021, represented a decrease of 14 vehicles (-0.9%).

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, from January to September 2022, 2,307 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, with the number of victims being 814, up by 38 over the same period in 2021 (-127 compared to 2019), which means a year-on-year increase of 4.9% (and a reduction of 13.5% compared to 2019). Of that number of victims, 753 were counted as minor injuries, 52 as serious injuries and 9 as fatalities.

Air transport - Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira´s airports grew in the 3rd quarter of 2022, over 30% compared to the 2019 figures

The airports of Madeira e Porto Santo recorded a movement of approximately 1.3 million passengers, in the 3rd quarter of 2022, showing a 49.2% increase vis-à-vis the same period in 2021. Compared to the same quarter of 2019, there was an increase of 30.6%. Both airports had a positive change in passengers’ movement towards 2021, with Madeira and Porto Santo having annual changes of 50.2% and 38.6%, respectively. When compared to the same period of 2019, the values were already exceeded by 30.4% in Madeira and 33.7% in Porto Santo. Between January and September, the movement of passengers at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports was approximately 3.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 134.0% and of 17.0% compared to the figures recorded in the first nine months of 2019. 

Regarding air cargo, in the 3rd quarter, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo had a slight decrease of 0.9% (-13.2% when compared to 2019). In both airports, unloaded goods increased by 14.1% (+10.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2019).

Maritime transport - Passenger traffic in Madeira-Porto Santo line in the 3rd quarter of 2022 was higher than in the same period last year

Regarding maritime transport, in the first nine months of this year, there were 193 cruise ships entering the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. In the same period, in the previous year, there were 5 cruise ships docked the ports of Madeira. When compared to the last pre-pandemic year (2019) the number of stopovers went up by 28. Despite this positive trend in the number of stopovers, the number of passengers in transit (190,262) is just over half (54.6%) of those recorded in the same period of 2019.

In the first nine months of 2022, the Port of Funchal received 187,712 passengers in transit, the majority Europeans (89.2%). The main nationalities were German (40.6% of the total; -49.4% than in the same period of 2019), British (39.6% of the total; -26.5% than in 2019), Italian (2.3% of the total; -63.7% than in 2019), French (1.1% of the total; -71.5% than in 2019) and Austrian (0.9% share; -69.9% than in 2019). It should also be noted that the number of North American transit passengers in the Port of Funchal, in that year, was 12,541 (6.7% of the total; -36.5% than in the first nine months of 2019), Brazilian passengers were 4,051 (2.2% of the total; +47.9% than in 2019) and Canadian passengers were 1,694 (0.9% share; -73.1% than in 2019).

On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers in the 3rd quarter of this year increased by 8.7% compared to the same quarter of 2021, slightly higher than in 2019 (+4.3%). In cumulative terms, in the first nine months, the number of passengers transported was 268.5 thousand, representing a value one-third higher than the previous year (+36.7%; -8.4% compared to the same period of 2019).

The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the quarter in reference, was overall positive (+9.2% compared to the same quarter of 2021; +11.8% towards 2019). This change contributed to the increase observed in the unloading (+9.8%; +14.1% towards 2019), as well as in the loading (+5.2%; -3.6% towards 2019). The year-to-date change was equally positive (+17.9%) and both in unloading (+19.2%) and loading (+8.6%) goods, but when compared to 2019, the values are lower (11.4% in the total movement of goods, 12.3% in the unloaded goods and 5.3% of the loaded goods).

From January to September 2022, 1,693 recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, representing a 37.8% increase when compared to the same period in 2021 (+13.7% compared to the first nine months of 2019). These vessels counted 3,328 crew members and passengers, up by 44.4% over the same period last year (-17.2% compared to the value of January to September 2019). In the 3rd quarter of 2022, the increase was even less sharp 1.5% (+0.1% compared to 2019) in vessels, which carried 3.9% fewer crew and passengers (-9.4% compared to 2019).

DREM releases Time Series of Transport Statistics

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today on its website, the Time Series of Transport Statistics updated with the data for 2021. The series now has more than 130 tables, being the most extensive of the series released by DREM.

The information is grouped into three chapters:

- Land transport - Data on the regular careers of public transport of passengers by buses, road accidents, motor vehicles sold, tickets sold and revenues in cable cars, licensed taxis, and insured cars.

- Air transport - Information on the commercial movement of aeroplanes, passengers, freight and mail at airports of the A.R. of Madeira.

- Maritime transport - Data on the movement of vessels, passengers and freight in the ports of A.R. of Madeira.
