Movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood 40.0% above the same month of 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of October 2022.

In the month in reference, there was a movement of 391.6 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported in 2,821 aircraft (commercial flights), representing year-on-year changes of 35.8% and 29.9%, respectively. When compared to October 2019 (pre-pandemic), there was also a growth, of 39.8% in the movement of passengers and 31.6% in the movement of aircraft. The cumulative year-on-year growth (January to October), for aircraft and passenger movements was of 74.0% and 116.3%, respectively (+15.3% and +19.2% compared to the same period of 2019).

Each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 144 passengers (139 in October 2021) at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo that figure did not exceed 83 passengers (68 in the same month last year).

In October 2022, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with domestic traffic growing more (+36.0%) than international traffic (+35.6%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), domestic traffic grew by 44.4% and international traffic by 35.6%.

At Madeira airport, and in the month under review, passenger traffic is distributed equally between domestic traffic (47.4% of the total) and international traffic (52.6%), a trend that has been observed since July 2021, related to the recovery of demand for international flights. At Porto Santo Airport there was a significant predominance of domestic traffic, with values of approximately three quarters of total traffic (74.9% of the total).

In this reference month, scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 92.2% of all aircraft movements and 93.6% of passengers (90.3% and 92.1% in the same period last year, respectively).

In October 2022, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 82.3%, with Madeira Airport reaching 82.9% and Porto Santo 73.0%. During the same period last year, the occupancy rate in both airports (81.5%) and the airport of Madeira (82.6%) was slightly lower, however the airport of Porto Santo had a lower rate (64.4%).

In the first ten months of 2022, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports reached 3.4 million, half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes inland and domestic connections (49.7% of the total as a whole) and the other half international (50.3%). Under the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of ARM (36.2%), followed by Germany (22.7%) and France (8.3%).

In IATA (International Air Transport Association) summer season, from March 27th to October 29th, 2022, Madeira airport operated commercial flights of 28 airlines, with 60 routes to 54 destinations. Porto Santo airport operated nine airlines, to eight routes and eight destinations.
