In December 2022
Movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira more than doubled compared to the previous year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of December 2022.
In the month in reference, there was a movement of 326.7 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported in 2,729 aircraft (commercial flights), representing year-on-year changes of 61.7% and 34.2%, respectively. When compared to December 2019 (pre-pandemic month), there was also a growth, of 38.4% in the movement of passengers and 38.23% in the movement of aircraft. The cumulative year-on-year growth (January to December) was 65.9% and 102.1%, for aircraft and passenger movements, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 124 passengers (104 in December 2021) at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo that figure did not exceed 53 passengers (38 in the same month last year).

In December 2022, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic growing more (+71.1%) than domestic traffic (+52.9%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (December 2019), domestic traffic grew by 41.7% and international traffic by 35.4%.
At Madeira airport, and in the month under review, passenger traffic is distributed almost equally between domestic (48.2% of the total) and international traffic (51.8%). At Porto Santo Airport there was a significant preponderance of domestic traffic, with values higher than three-quarters of total traffic (76.8% of the total).
In this reference month, scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 92.8% of all aircraft movements and 94.5% of passengers (85.9% and 88.7% in the same period last year, respectively).
In December 2022, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 70.5%, with Madeira Airport reaching 70.9% and Porto Santo, 58.6%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, standing at 62.2%, 62.8% and 48.0%, in the same order.
From January to December of 2022, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports reached 4.1 million (an all-time record), half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes inland and domestic connections (49.4% of the total as a whole) and the other half international (50.6%). In the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (36.1%), followed by Germany (22.9%) and France (8.0%).
