The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of November 2022.
In the month in reference, there was a movement of 314.0 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported in 2,465 aircraft (commercial flights). This represents year-on-year changes of 38.3% and 36.0%, respectively. When compared to November 2019, there was also a growth, of 32.9%, in the movement of passengers and of 28.7% in the movement of aircrafts. The cumulative year-on-year growth (January to November), for aircraft and passenger movements, was 69.8% and 106.6%, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 132 passengers (the same value in November 2021) at Madeira airport, while at Porto Santo that figure did not exceed 58 passengers (43 in the same month last year).

In November 2022, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports recorded positive year-on-year changes, with domestic traffic growing more (+40.8%) than international traffic (+36.2%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), domestic traffic grew by 36.3% and international traffic by 30.1%.
At Madeira airport, and in the month under review, passenger traffic was predominantly international (54.1% of the total) rather than domestic (45.9%). At Porto Santo Airport there was a significant preponderance of domestic traffic, which concentrated approximately two-thirds of total traffic (68.3% of the total).
In this reference month, scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 93.0% of all aircraft movements and 94.3% of passengers (88.0% and 89.0% in the same period last year, respectively).
In November 2022, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 75.8%, with Madeira Airport reaching 76.7% and Porto Santo 56.9%. During the same period last year, the occupancy rate in both airports (77.2%) and the airport of Madeira (78.3%) was slightly lower. The airport of Porto Santo had, however, a lower rate (50.9%).
In the first eleven months of 2022, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports reached 3.8 million, half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes inland and domestic connections (49.4% of the total as a whole) and the other half to international (50.6%). Under the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of ARM (36.1%), followed by Germany (22.9%) and France (8.1%).
In IATA (International Air Transport Association) summer season, from March 27th to November 29th, 2022, Madeira airport operated commercial flights of 28 airlines, with 60 routes to 54 destinations. Porto Santo airport operated nine airlines, to eight routes and eight destinations.
