In June 2023
Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) experienced a year-on-year growth of 6.0%
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today the first set of data concerning air transportation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of June 2023, based on information provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal.
During this month, the airports in the ARM recorded a passenger movement of 416.9 thousand passengers, transported via 2,842 commercial flights, reflecting year-on-year changes of 6.0% and 2.9% respectively. When compared to June 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also a growth of 36.5% in passenger movement and 25.2% in aircraft movement.
Considering the first half of 2023, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were 19.5% and 30.3% respectively. On average, each aircraft (including both landings and takeoffs) transported around 153 passengers (148 in June 2022) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure nearly reached 99 passengers (98 in the same month of the previous year).
In June 2023, the movement of domestic and international passengers at the airports of the ARM exhibited a positive year-on-year change in international traffic (+14.6%) and a slightly negative change in the domestic segment (-1.8%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), there was growth in both segments, with a +41.3% increase in domestic traffic and +32.2% in international traffic.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (53.2%) predominated over domestic traffic (46.8% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a dominance of domestic traffic (75.0% of the total), albeit with a larger disproportion compared to May.
During this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 89.9% of the total aircraft movements and 91.5% of the passengers (compared to 92.4% and 93.8% in the same period last year, respectively).
In June 2023, the occupancy rate of aircraft movements at ARM airports reached around 86.4%, with Madeira Airport achieving 87.6% and Porto Santo Airport at 75.3%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rates were lower at 83.5%, 84.6%, and 71.9%, respectively.
In the first half of 2023, the total passengers embarking and disembarking at ARM airports amounted to 2 299.7 million, with half of the total corresponding to exclusively domestic traffic between airports located within the national territory (comprising 47.5% of the total) and the other half related to international traffic (52.5%). In this context, the United Kingdom was the primary origin and destination country for international flights at ARM airports (33.7%), followed by Germany (20.8%) and France (8.8%).
